i had the opposite experience. i haven't read fantasy since the black cauldron, as a child. i've been mostly reading serious literature my whole life. i gave moorcock a chance since his work with hawkwind interested me. i was amazed by the first book of the series: elric of melnibone. i loved the writing. i loved the philosophical ideas. the imagery. how the entire structure of law vs. choas is adhered to throughout without an big contradictions. the wizards more closely aligned to law are closer to scientists etc. it's brilliant stuff. i never gave a fuck about action in literature. if i wanted action then i'd watch a film. but his action is poetic.
