i know some people who used these filters daily for decades and all of them died unusually early (relative, meaning died at around 65 instead of reaching 75/85+ which would be usual due to their "health focussed lifestyle" e.g. no drugs, including smokes, low alc, /fit/ lifestyle)

Charcoal filters organics and chlorine. There's also carbon blocks that act as a sediment filter as well.
RO filters pretty much almost everything (to a degree)
Resin filters remove dissolved ions

A complete system would be prefilter -> carbon -> softener -> RO -> resin

i believe it leaves residue of the material that cleans the water and that shit fucks your stomach. I used to get my water from some Chinese couple that I believe would use RO because they were using like some system with big pipes of steel and pans that would filter the water and my stomach never fucking hurt. But when I used this type of filters or go clean my water at Walmart or any food store my stomach would hurt from drinking the water.

I wish they would make filters with more clearance from the bottom.
If you leave the filter submerged in water, it inevitably gets that pink slime on it.
Filters should be engineered to dry out better to prevent that junk from ruining the filter and covering the container.
Make sure to get a filter with plenty of clearance and leave the top open so it can dry out more.

bpa's have a significantly higher boiling point than water, they are left in the boiling tank and do not travel through the evaporation coils, xenoestrogens for the most part are volatile, those that are not also have a much higher boiling point than water so once again they are left in the tank. also if you're that worried they have a charcoal filter attachment for $30 that you plug into the 7-12 gallon finished product tank which last 9-12 months each. i'm not saying reverse osmosis won't take care of bpa's and estrogenic bullshit either, it will, but why fuck around w/that when i can get the same results from my distiller which is plumbed into my home so every floors kitchen has it's own dedicated faucet

The idea is that pure water does not get processed well by the body and needs a binder of sorts to help out, which is why we like electrolytes. RO is great for removing the nasty stuff, but I would throw back in a bit of salt or just toss a rock into the reservoir for some remineralization.
