You know how America's economy is constantly on the verge of imploding? Trump thinks that he can shore up the economy with an influx of cheap resources.
Venezuela has the largest untapped supply of oil in the world, even more than Saudi Arabia, its just harder to get to and extract.
Venezuela also have a bunch of untapped mineral resources, including what are unconfirmed deposits of rare earth minerals, the kind that China is trying to form a monopoly on to hold the world's tech industries hostage.

Trump is basically making a show of force, either Venezuela effectively forfeits its resources to the USA in an exploitative trade deal to avoid war, or we take them by force. We don't care how we get them as long as we get them.
