It does go back thousands of years, it's the festival of my people, my FVLK. My Celtic people created Samhain, which is what Halloween is. 31st of October is the day where the veil between the spirit realm & earth realm is at its thinnest.

Samhain was always about creating masks to resemble your dead loved ones, to bring them back to life for one day to honour them. It was about honouring the dead through creativity and celebration. We would carve the faces of our deceased onto turnips (modern Halloween uses pumpkins now).

Tiny problem though. Fuck Halloween. Samhain is cool, but Halloween is not Samhain. Halloween is a commercialised bastardised holiday that violates the tradition of Samhain. It replaces the faces of dead loved ones and ancestors with the faces of monsters or demons. It turns the day of the year that's supposed to be about remembering mortality and the memories of the dead into a juvenile festival meant for buying candy and chocolate and lining the pockets of companies and businesses.

Ironically, Christians were the only people to keep Samhain alive through All-saint's day, the day where the dead are honoured. The exact same spirit of Samhain. Modern Halloween is a joke.

My son got a bucket full of candy that he had fun sorting through and playing with the rest of the night. My neighborhood was light on kids because it what quite cold this year but still went through half a bowl of candy and got to see some cool costumes.
