Major Japanese electric utilities are preparing contingency plans to secure alternative fuel sources, signaling a readiness to exit the Sakhalin-2 LNG project in Russia if mandated by the government, company executives said.
The move comes as Washington increases pressure on its allies to sever Russian energy ties to isolate Moscow. The Sakhalin-2 project is a cornerstone of Japan's energy supply, accounting for approximately 9% of its total liquefied natural gas imports.
JERA, Japan's largest power generator, along with Tohoku Electric Power and Kyushu Electric Power, have all indicated they could navigate a supply cut-off by turning to the spot market and other long-term suppliers. JERA currently receives about two million tonnes of LNG annually from Sakhalin-2 under contracts ending in 2026 and 2029, while Tohoku Electric's and Kyushu Electric's deals run until 2030 and 2031, respectively.
Despite the preparations, the Japanese government remains cautious. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently conveyed to U.S. President Donald Trump that a rapid withdrawal from Russian gas would present a significant challenge to the nation's energy security. Japan's industry minister has also warned that replacing the supply would inevitably lead to higher procurement costs and increased electricity prices for consumers.
The United States has been promoting its own energy exports as an alternative, with officials suggesting Japan could eventually join the $44 billion Alaska LNG project. However, Japanese firms have so far expressed reservations, citing concerns over the project's feasibility and final cost.

Russian Authorities Detain 35 in Raid on Romani Settlement

Russian security forces conducted a large-scale raid on the Romani settlement of Piekhanovo near Tula, taking 35 men to a military enlistment office for failing to register for military service, Russian media reported Saturday.

Last year, satellite images of the Patriot positions at Zhulyany airport from September 2023 were published on the Google Earth web platform. After some time, they were censored.
