I have this dracaena plant. It looked pretty much like this, one tall shoot, one medium, one short. But after I'd had it for a couple of months I realised it has an infestation of mealybugs. Mealybugs are like headlice for plants, they live on the leaves and suck out the sap. They're really hard to get rid of generally, but the way the dracaena is shaped makes it even more difficult because the leaves overlap each other at their bases. Conventional treatment is to spray it down liberally and regularly with alcohol, but because the leaves overlap so densely you're unlikely to ever get rid of all of the eggs, and if you leave even a few the colony can just re-establish itself. I even fully immersed it in a tub of isopropyl once and it didn't work. So what I ended up doing was I stopped watering it. The dracaena is fairly hardy, so this was over a period of many months, just leaving it dry. Letting the plant die, right? Starving it, because the bugs live off it, so if it starves, the bugs starve. The short sprout died off first, then a couple of months later the medium one shriveled and lost all its leaves. The tall sprout took a long time, slowly shedding leaves, and I could see the signs of infestation increasing on it as the bugs migrated from the dying sprouts to the one big one, centralising the population. I kept on waiting until it only had a few leaves left on it, just right at the point where it would have died off forever. And a combination of the lowered population of bugs and the thinning out of the leaves meant I could scrub out all remaining sign of the infestation, I doused it in isopropyl, I could get into every nook and cranny of the plant and purge the any sign of mealybugs or their eggs. And then I resumed caring for the plant, new soil, regular water. The small sprout never came back but the medium and large ones flourished better than ever, because they were free of the parasitic mealyworms once and for all. This is just a story about a plant.
