BRUSSELS — The European Union will take at least another year to figure out how to wield its powerful digital law to rein in the risks of ChatGPT.

Use of the artificial intelligence chatbot has taken off in Europe, and OpenAI this month declared it has crossed an important threshold for regulatory scrutiny. The news that more than 120 million people use ChatGPT’s search function each month came as no surprise to the European Commission, two officials told POLITICO.

Yet regulators have not yet figured out how to handle ChatGPT under the EU’s powerful Digital Services Act, in force since early 2024, to make sure platforms minimize their risks. A decision is only expected in mid-2026, according to a senior Commission official.

Exactly. Its what google used to be but better. If you need to look something up these days its gonna take multiple searches, multiple sites, and you'll just get conflicting information. With gpt you can just ask, maybe with one or two follow up questions, and youre done. Good for shopping too...sometimes. I'm all about cutting this time wasting shit out. I'd rather go back to brick and mortar retail at this point than have to look up products and price shop online anymore, I cant fucking stand it.

It is a good search engine. Like, ask it a question in natural language. The way askjeeves was supposed to work 20 years ago but didn't.
It searches a bunch of different resources quickly and gives you the correct answer most of the time, but not all the time.

I asked the chat bots how to maximize my income as a medical doctor from Latvia with a USA Greenland and it told me about new programs passed in 2025 to allow foreign doctors to work in the USA without doing residency again. Pretty clutch.

Children's libraries sometimes had scratch and sniff stickers filed in them too.

It's the slow crippling and hobbling of convenience.
I wonder sometimes if there were similar tech advances that helped lead to the destruction of other civilizations.
INB5 lead lined Aqueducts. I'm not exactly talking about that, as it's a chemical poisoning effect, I'm talking more about the fact that it was commonplace for people to have memorized 10-20 phone numbers, several years ago, I did a test when I went out, asking people if they knew their OWN phone number.
90% didn't
Strangely that number has gone WAY down, since stores now automatically ask for customer's phone number at the register for their shopper's card discount.
I'm amazed people just rattle that shit off, not realizing that their phone now connects every aspect of their lives.

>what do people do with this garbage
A lot of people use it for dumb shit.
A lot of people use it as a slightly more convenient search engine
Some people use it to code, whether that is a good idea or not is debateable.
It has some legitemate uses though. For instance the scientific literature search engines are absolute dogshit, you can't summarize what your paper is about with a handfull of tags. These LLMs can read through abstracts, find papers based on their actual content or mention on scientific forums. When searching for papers during the literature phase of a project, i like to use 2 or 3 search engines, 1-2 forums, and 2-3 AIs to find relevant papers.
I also think it is usefull to scientists like me in coding, i learnt C, and R at uni, i get the concepts of coding, but as programming is not a key part of my research, i don't really like wasting my time on it, and much of the software i may need to use is in python which i know much less about. But AI can help me find in these massive walls of code where the parts relevant to me are, and which variables i may need to modify. I could do the same thing with a couple hours of googling, or i can do it with 5 min with an AI.

jEWTUBe is already packed with suggestive and hypnotic dross, and more and more aspects it will need to further itself like crypto videos and the strange AI "FRIEND" communities and worshippers are being mined for comments and supporters that are/would be helpful to it.
>Inordinate amount of AI content on 4Troons in the last year and ½...

ALSO:
>The Federal Reserve now includes "Singularity: Extinction" in their forecasts.

>“Technological singularity refers to a scenario in which AI eventually surpasses human intelligence, leading to rapid and unpredictable changes to the economy and society. Under a benign version of this scenario, machines get smarter at a rapidly increasing rate, eventually gaining the ability to produce everything, leading to a world in which the fundamental economic problem, scarcity, is solved,” the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas writes. “Under a less benign version of this scenario, machine intelligence overtakes human intelligence at some finite point in the near future, the machines become malevolent, and this eventually leads to human extinction. This is a recurring theme in science fiction, but scientists working in the field take it seriously enough to call for guidelines for AI development.” - Dallas Fed

"Brain connectivity systematically scaled down with the amount of external support: the Brain‑only group exhibited the strongest, widest‑ranging networks, Search Engine group showed intermediate engagement, and LLM assistance elicited the weakest overall coupling. In session 4, LLM-to-Brain participants showed weaker neural connectivity and under-engagement of alpha and beta networks; and the Brain-to-LLM participants demonstrated higher memory recall, and re‑engagement of widespread occipito-parietal and prefrontal nodes, likely supporting the visual processing, similar to the one frequently perceived in the Search Engine group. The reported ownership of LLM group's essays in the interviews was low. The Search Engine group had strong ownership, but lesser than the Brain-only group. The LLM group also fell behind in their ability to quote from the essays they wrote just minutes prior. "

Automation is retarded but that seems to be what a lot of decision makers want because it'll be more efficient, mainly as they don't understand that for every layer of automation you need two layers of observers and maintainers to keep it going

this kind of data is basically unusable but it's good that it provides sources. The one actual legit use I've found with chatGPT is that, while it gets everything AGGRESSIVELY wrong, it at least gives you a chance to pick up bits and pieces of what it dropped and try to make something yourself. For example, providing sources or functions you can use.

... so, it's basically a search engine that just lies for shits and giggles. hilarious

>machines aren't intelligent and never will be
Depends how you define intelligence.
They can already solve problems that we haven't been able to.
Are they creative? Do they have souls? Doubtful, but then some argue we don't either and are just wetware that took an incredibly long time to develop to where we are today.

Fine, call it an autonomous Virus then. Still as dangerous if it follows it's programming to forever expand and remove obstacles.

>because boomers instantiated a world where approved thought is more highly paid than mechanical work.
Boomers are not as monolithic as you purport.
It's primarily GenXers and Mills who are DRIVING the AI creation.

Just a reminder that this has been considered LONG before AI creation was ever a possibility:
Have a more recent iteration:

sports statistics is what I've referenced when I've had a discussion about how shit it is as a search engine as it's a lot easier for people to understand how badly it fucks up. You ask it "how many penalties has ngubu scored in the last 10 years" and it will make up games and scores, if you tell it that the answer is wrong it'll say sorry make up an entirely new list of fake games. I see gpt answers now constantly being used as someone doing their research and confidently coming back with what the correct answer is

Create an AI to control the AI. It's the same process going through ECM, ECCM, ECCCM, etc. just with AI. Sure, it may end up in a state where all technology gets destroyed and we have to rebuild, but that still beats being dead.

It allows me to an accelerate production at work. Of course you need to vet it. But having the right guard rails in place in the prompt that does not unintentionally hinder it is a game changer. Broad enough and flexible enough and willing to challenge itself.

I actually went through the data to verify and the numbers it quotes are actually correct in the "raw data" section, even applying the extra 000 that's omitted to figures, and though it's a little odd to quote two separate sources at the top you can manually check and the sources agree with each other, mostly. I didn't run all the calculations because I have work to do but they seem reasonable and it accounts for inflation, as it should.

The thing is, you have to manually check the data, which takes about as much time as if you asked chatGPT to do it, provided you are capable of using a search engine. Even if you say that the data is 100% correct, if you were to draw any thoughtful conclusions from the data, you'd likely be wrong because the sources have the much finer detail (including rake versus house-beats-gambler winnings, which types of game are on the rise like Baccarat contributing greatly) and if you showed up to present this you'd have no idea what you're actually presenting. The only real insight you get from the chatGPT response is ... wow, the papers said the number of tables decreased by about 13% and would you look at that, the earnings also decreased by about 13%. wow, who would have thunk it, nothing happened!

It can assume characters of my choosing or I can describe a character trope for it to assume, like a pessimistic android or a wise-cracking rouge. Plus, I can give it nearly any voice or speaking style. The devs who make the program that utilizes it will soon be adding functionality to have multiple personalities, and when they do that, my spaceship AI assistant will be Clarkson, Hammond, and May, depending on what aspect of the ship they represent; May for navigation, Clarkson for combat, and Hammond for everything else.

I think those using AI to come to this conclusion would come to a similar conclusion if they were forced to manually parse the data themselves. Or maybe they'd just be filtered outright due to an innate lack of resourcefulness. AI is a tool to be used, and if people are too stupid and lacking in curiosity to actually dig with a tool that makes digging piss easy, then they were never going to dig in the first place. I am likely biased since I don't use it for work and basically only to research things for fun.
