A more historical reading of the bible/torah realizes that there's huge gaps and it was written by multiple individuals or groups (current mainstream theory suggests four main writers for the pentateuch). Odds are the initial story was longer and had some ties to rituals the ancient hebrews would have been naturally familiar with.
