How does one even go about checking their own files? Or files prior to downloading? I guess the easiest method of prevention would be to screenshot images as opposed to saving the original.

a browser will download all the images you see into a cache and will linger around in your drive for awhile. So... simply viewing the image is enough to get it on your computer. There are some hacks you can do I think to prevent the image from going on your hard drive. But most anons won't do this. Also deleting the image from your harddrive is not enough to get rid of it... the authorities have tools to grab everything including deleted stuff.

Just if you are curious you can create a ramdrive on any computer system. And then in your browser settings you can change the path to the ramdrive. If you reboot all browser cache is gone and cannot be retrieved by anyone.

You can append arbitrary data to the end of jpg and png files. Web browsers will just ignore the extra data and display the image normally. This extra data can be an executable file (ie. a virus) or an archive file full of dolphin porn.
You could have it saved on your PC without realizing it.

4chan has been scanning image files for embedded data for over a decade, so you're only at risk if you have ancient memes saved on your PC.
