Only the wealthy have the opportunity to live what was a very basic, standard life yesteryear. Own a home, wife doesn't have to work, raise a family in reasonable comfort. Both are true. The economics have gotten completely fucked but the breakdown of society and culture are an even larger issue. During the last Depression there was at least still real community and family and other traditional structures to fall back on.
