>auto repair garage charges $150/hr
>auto mechanic makes $20/hr

This is why the economy is broken. "Overhead" is costing way too much and the money isn't making it to the people actually doing the work.

no mechanics make $20 per hour other than the squatemalans at jiffy lube. real certified mechanics pull down $75k - $100k depending on the dealer and area.

That's still only like 30-35 an hour.

100K is $50/hour, add in benefits and healthcare and you can more than double that. Shop probably takes $25-35 hour off the top of that

Not unusual at all

$30-35 an hour here for local boys licensed techs.
$120/hr shop rate. I quit and went independently and charge $80/hr from my home shop but the last few years it’s been LS based engine swaps only.

My tools are worth 40k.

They pay $160,000 a year for ASE certified in my area, still not enough for me to deal with that bulkshit work. I work at my own pace, and that pace is slacker paced.

kek, my box was just shy of 30k. I don't turn wrenches anymore. It's just collecting dust now. Total value with tools is well over 150k

Every business in the world runs on this model, because businesses need to make money and turn a profit or they can't pay their rent or mortgages or buy supplies.

Shops charge you for parts. All they pay for is rent in a really crummy part of town, tools which are a one time purchase is the mechanic doesn't provide their own, the wages and (insurance).

Yes usually they charge double the price of parts that's how businesses make money. This is why I do my own repairs whenever possible.

Cost of employee is double the salary they get paid.
