The north has a culture of working together and having hierarchy within that. North is more "old money". They have more big cities which comes with finance and corporate. Many of the kids are insulated in a small preppy world where fitting in is being like the other guys. There's an expensive local college that advertises itself on "life skills". The south has a different culture of self reliance with little hierarchy. Freedom is king. The tool for that freedom is your car. They're a lot closer to nature. Frequently the rich guys are the head of some construction company from my experience.

I went to an expensive boarding school in the south so I got a taste of both worlds. I find myself drifting to blue collar as my preferred life oddly. Aristocratic life feels so delicate playing games to keep yourself in position and in the graces of your peers.

It's hard to overstate how much of a backwater the South was until quite recently. Nashville still had outhouses blocks from the state capitol in the 1930s and 40s if memory serves. Hookworm was endemic because people were too poor for shoes. You can hate the decline of Southern culture, but the leadership of the 70s and 80s dragged the region out of sweatshops into modernity, and that was a good thing.
