Because they need your voting power to win, but also need to maintain the illusion that they are a majority with a mandate that justifies their sweeping changes as the will of the people. Losing an election means they don't have that support and their justification falls apart... but not if you didn't *actually* lose the election and you really do have the majority as long as you ignore all facts to the contrary! You didn't lose the election, they cheated! Now you have TWICE as much cause to do whatever it takes to hurt them, you're the victim!
The false reality they live in and the fact that they still need to make the levers of government in the real world work to do anything don't always mesh together well, but you grease the wheels with cognitive dissonance.
