Stalin is honestly one of the most interesting figures in world history, a large part because of how much seethe he causes and like 90% of shit you hear about him are actual lies that aren't backed up by the evidence that was found in the archives.
Here's a good book explaining the difference between "historical stalin" and real stalin, and no it isn't a "whitewashing book" it still shows his actual terrible crimes, but presents a very different picture to who was really just an incredibly pragmatic politican and war leader acting within the situations he and his nation found themselves at the time.
I always think of Stalin like Cao Cao, people view Cao Cao the machevellian corrupt villian through RotTK rather than historical Cao Cao who was an incredibly personable and likable, a phenomenal statesman, extremely talented manager and leader and insanely well educated and talented in the arts and culture.
To show I'm not "biased" here as well, I also recommend Kotkin, who fucking HATES Communism and Stalin and is a Hoover institute Neocon, but has written also another fantastic biography on Stalin that utilizes heavily the archives.
