Why can’t Russia defeat Ukraine? I honestly thought, based on all the war maps posted on /pol/, that they had at least reached the outskirts of Kiev. I go on reddit and see someone there post a war map, and it’s virtually the same as it was two years ago. How is that even possible? I remember maybe a month ago some anon here was saying that over 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been encircled Russian forces. How is Ukraine still not defeated?

Because a war of maneuver turned into a war of attrition. I hope it lasts forever.

Because Russia is not the USA. They dont want to carpet bomb the ccountry and destabilize the whole region for the next 50 years. Also half of Ukraine is Russian. They dont want to kill their brothers ansysters. They only have problem with the leadership. So with constraints like that its hard to win.
Also 50 different countries sends weapons and aid to Ukraine and Ukraine had the biggest army in Europe.

it looks a lot more humiliating without colors. even with combat incidents marked that reflect current troop locations along the front line

> Why can’t Russia defeat Ukraine?
You assume this to still be their war goal. But their real goal has become to defeat NATO because NATO wouldn't allow peace in Ukraine.

>Why won't Russia choose the set piece battles to unfold in territory that favors Ukraine logistically instead of keeping them in territory that favors Russia logistically, in a war of attritition.

That cope, "Russia is winning, but too slow", would actually be credible if NATO had not itself been embroiled into decade-long wars...

3 years is not actually a very long war.
The war started with a very dynamic phase, then turned into a very static attrition phase (still ongoing), and at some point it should again become more dynamic.

If you only look at maps you're missing a ton of information about things like military capability, personnel, morale, public support, funding, etc.

Putin must take responsibility for underestimating the resistance at the start of the invasion
They clearly had no expectations of it lasting more than a month given the logistics disaster that unfolded (remember that dilapidated 1960s van with a z painted on it?)
Then they continued to view it as a maneuver war for another year or so, losing immense amounts of armor and troops
Their current strategy is honestly the most effective yet, and it's not even close, as they're actually winning now
The big question is what are the attrition rates
Some say Russia is still incurring bigger losses, others say Russia is inflicting casualties at a huge ratio
The ratio means everything in a war of attrition
My guess as to the current ratio is Russia has moved it in their favor, and it's probably in that 1:1 to 2:1 range.
This would not be sustainable, as it means Russia won't run into manpower stress, which happened in the first year.

*Not sustainable for Ukraine
If Russia can actually build momentum and maintain logistics, they should be able to capture Odessa, which could end the war
I don't think Russia takes kiev, just because it would be difficult to administer
Of course if Russia determines that Ukraine has nothing left to defend with, maybe they take it for symbolic reasons and find a way to move back out

This war isn't about 'winning'.

It's about terminating as many people as possible.

On both sides.
