Mankey is only available in Yellow version that early as a contingency to beat Brock, your best best in RB to beat Brock when starting with Charmander is a Nidoran, or overlevel your Charmander to a point where ember does a shitton of damage due to Onix's low special stat.

Bellsprout and Oddish are also options for Misty if you can't be bothered to look for a low encounter rate Pikachu in Viridian.

Growlithe in Red and Vulpix in Blue are available at routes 7 and 8 long before the Pokemon mansion and just in time for Erika. You also have the option of Eevee into Flareon but why would you ever do that? Only fire types you exclusively encounter at the Pokemon mansion are Ponyta and Magmar(Blue exclusive).

Charizard, like all starters is not a bad choice, but you do have plenty of other fire options.

If not crippled, anyone on government benefits must attend minimum community service hours yearly.

Violent offenders to have strict three-strike laws. Third strike = death penalty. Murder = death penalty. Child abuse = castration without anaesthetic. Littering = public beating.

For Brock you don't need anything special. Just fight everything up to him for XP and spam Ember. Geodude and Onix have such low specials that it'll chew through them faster than their tackles on you; plus they'll waste turns on defense curl and bide. It's doable by level 12, maybe less.

I always felt like a "blue" type of guy, but Squirtle was always garbage. I'd rather raise a Gyarados and put Bubblebeam on it. The rest of the game is easy from there.

Now Bulbasaur, not my first pick, but it is severely underrated. Sleep Powder and Razor Leaf are busted in gen 1. Venusaur even gets perfect crits with Razor Leaf. Then you've got the Toxic + Leech Seed combo --- but honestly you'll never need this in single player. It has its niches in competitive, though.

My first playthrough ended with a level 71 Charizard and some HM slaves. I was 9. I couldn't beat the Safari Zone and ran out of money. Didn't even have a Pay Day user or TM or any balls. Kek. I think now I could have found a hidden item to sell, but I aced it on my second playthrough anyway. I always do test runs before playing for real.

Not entirely sure but back then I never reloaded my save when I lost or failed the Safari Zone. Losing takes half of your money, and I was blacking out from constantly pushing my luck (trying to fight entire zones alone without any healing). Maybe it never occurred to me to save before trying things, but I started doing that by my second playthrough. Later that summer I completed the Pokedex too (sans legit Mew).

Brock was such a difficult battle with Charmander but I'm glad I stick it out because come Misty is ass blasted that cunt with charmander without a problem.
Once I got to level 100, my Charizard was so powerful I would destroy any fucker that tried to link battle me. Little 1 hit KOs. My favorite is the, "it's not very effective."

It's really not that bad. XP levels increase in such a magnitude that you can get a freshly caught Pokemon up to snuff before the E4 without losing much time at all. Especially if you save some good trainer battles.

I used to play like you, but when I revisit older gens, I specifically pick up mons who can reliably help with the next task, and dump them if/when their use is fulfilled. I even started using TMs I never would, and overwriting them --- for example, I caught a Clefairy in Mt. Moon, evolved it right away, gave it Mega Punch and Water Gun, beat Misty, gave it Bubblebeam, then later replaced it with Lapras who I taught Surf and Thunderbolt.

It's scary to expend finite or limited resources so early in the game, but it's a lot of fun when you have a plan.

To add, being afraid to swap mons out is how a lot of people end up with a useless Butterfree by the E4. Butterfree is meant to help you blaze through everything up to Misty, it's not meant to be a permanent team mate. Then there's Beedrill, but we don't talk about Beedrill. Poor guy.

I reset and picked Charmander, ground through the Rock and Water gyms with brute force.
Figured out that in the first gen, Charmander is really the only choice.

I also played with the other starters to see how they play and progress, but while Blaziken is Basediken and Feraligatr is meh, Typhlosion and Swampert have the best application the most for the longest.
