Basically this, even prior to Christianity, the West had local laws which involved reparations to pay, agreements, or forced labor for adultery depending on its severity.
Say you had sex with a woman who was unmarried, you were either forced by her family to take care of her, marry her or pay reparations, in which most of the time you'd still have to marry her.
If it was rape, you'd likely have to pay reparations such as forced labor for her family AND marry her.
If it was some other guy's woman, you were pretty much up to the guy's whim, you could be killed, get an agreement, trade her for some other girl in your family, in which you'd need the approval your own family and then pay reparations to both sides(low chances so you'd likely be killed).
A woman not being a virgin prior to marriage was not very desirable, if she was a single mother, because she cheated or her husband abandoned her, she was pretty much on her own, her family could disown her which is exactly why families were forced to teach the importance of faithfulness, to keep cohesion.
If she was a widow, things would be less harsh and she could marry another man. Things were rough but worked for a long time that way, even post-christianity, not much changed.
Most the garbage that replaced all this in the last 2 centuries has done nothing but create a society of hoes and enablers. It was a simple system in which no one had protection but you were left to your own rot and live the consequences of it, there may have been no jail for it but local laws, thats as close to the social contract that we had, not the kike garbage we got nowadays
