You can research and analyze and do statistics on that data until the cows come home and nobody can stop you. It's typically when you try to publish your findings that issues start to arise. It's not so much that the databases don't allow you to do research using their data (how would they even stop you? As long as you have access to the database in question, it's not like they can track your activity) as it is that reputable journals simply refuse to publish anything that's considered too controversial. But then again I'm just an undergraduate student so I'm not considered human yet (rightfully so) by my superiors, so my opinion doesn't matter.
