Doubt you’re serious, but if you are:
1. Congratulations sir!
2. Don’t be a dick
3. Listen to your child- answer their questions patiently to the best of your ability- when their “why’s?” reach the end of your knowledge, say “I don’t know, but let’s find out(later, if necessary) together”, then look it up.
4. Don’t feel like you need to hide all of your faults from your child. My parents came from poor families, were rebel teenagers/young adults who managed to make it in the middle class white collar world; by providing a “doll-house/menagerie” aesthetic, and refusing to own up to past mistakes, our family seemed very “fake”, for show, very shallow.
5. Let them explore and be curious. Bumps, bruises, broken bones build lessons and character.
6. Provide for your family but don’t get caught up trying to build wealth for them, working their entire childhood away with impossibly long hours. Your boss won’t remember how many weekends you worked ten years from now- your children will!
