Since i was basically a kid it did try to teach me some life skills. The military has classes to prevent enlisted from going into debt and to avoid being psychos, it tries to sign you up for a savings account and the barracks are forced to be tidy. I got no skills though cause i was a tanker, besides training on a tank you are just infantry on deployment. From my experience my battalion and probably the whole division was nothing more than a show force around our camps. The only threat to us was some pick up truck that carries a single mortar shell and drives away or a bomb on the road. Ukraine is an actual war with explosives frequently just wiping away squads of soldiers. Gaza is like a man clubbing a child with a stick so its a massacre and sudan is a war no one knows anything about.

in theory yes. i was SOWT in the airforce, could have gone into meteorology professionally pretty easily, i just hate school. as far as retaining/using skills, i'm pretty handy with firearms/tools, can jury rig alot of weird things, and i can eyeball measure almost anything and be pretty accurate. packing and organizing is easy.

never got into true combat, was involved in a few sketchy standoffs/fire exchange situations that got my blood pumping. shot a few rounds in the direction of the enemy, doubt i hit anyone.

war and armed conflicts are fucking stupid. we're a failure as a species for continuing to generate violence against each other over land and resources without ever acheiving anything meaningful diplomatically. it's all at the expense of just the taxpayers anyway, both financially and cost of life, fighting battles for people that will never truly know what it's like to be in danger, if they ever even know what it's like to be uncomfortable. jan 6th was hilarious for that reason alone, all of those worthless cowards got to actually feel fear for their safety for the first time in their lives, even if only for a few hours.

I can only imagine. I never even saw combat, it was what I saw in training that really made me lose faith. Some were great, but some were terrible, and having ANY bad ones is a death sentence in combat. We were just on an exercise doing simulated FIBUA, and our sergeant decided to lead us down an alleyway that was about 70 feet long with only one entrance and one exit, and all windows and doors were boarded along the way, so there was no escape if shit went down. Anyone coulld have seen it was a bad idea, but he takes us straight down it and sure enough, half way through it, a sim grenade drops off a roof right in the middle of our section, taking us all out. And you're supposed to feel confident going into a real battle under someone like this. Had the same too where a 2Lt lost his gun as well, and decided because he's an officer he can just go get another one, luckily a capptain was there and absolutely shit on him.

Here's a non bullshit explanation of someone who was in the Navy.
You show up to work driving from your house/barracks or if you have duty on the ship you're already there.
Grab chow if you had duty on the ship, go muster with your shop/other rates you work with for the Plan of the Day. Then they tell you what bullshit you will do other than your regular maintenance/job responsibilities for your rate.

You might be out to sea for a few days, a week, one day. You'll do a lot of bullshit cleaning up, trying to get sleep, have to stand watch on duty days which could be from top side roaver with an m16, quaterdeck watch checking ID's making announcements etc or shore duty it's usually sitting at a desk checking people in or answering phones/emails.

On deployment, there's less worry cause you're just out to fucking sea and you do the same things, maintenance/cleaning etc. trying to sleep as much as you can, and you also stand watch in your shop in the ship.

I walked out with less skills than what I went in with and my college degree was specialized in my field, no one liked me because I was professionally trained outside the military. The only saving factor for me was that I did so much work that I got full disability compensation for life. Failed a broken test, got hit with disrespect for saying the equipment was broken in a pilot program. All the equipment was replaced. No promotion, stayed E3 for 4 years. No college credit. Did managed to get a TS/SCI, but trump passed a law making it expire within 2 years, so college was out of the question.

The actual biggest fuck up was supporting my ex and my family who exploited me when I got PTSD.

Walked out with no benefits because the Navy literally didn't bother examining me because they were too fucking lazy to do their jobs or undermanned.

So no, it's not worth it from my experience in the Navy. I follow Andreas Kalckers method for making it, which is 10ml of 25% sodium chlorite mixed with 10ml of 50% citric acid in a glass beaker in a jar with 250ml of water in the jar, which I let sit for 12 hours and then refrigerate after a couple of hours so the gas gets trapped in the water and doesn't release when I open the jar. I keep it in the fridge indefinitely

I was in during the 00s and they were taking literal felons at that time, I literally took a GED at 17 to join early and apparently they won't let you do that anymore, so take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt.
I'd say about 10-20% washed out at some point during training and 70% of the remaining (including myself) were miserable and hated it, literally counting down days to leave like prison.
Combat deployment was ironically the highlight of the entire enlistment for me, everything else was gayer. Don't get me wrong, deployment was still gay, but at least I got to do the job I actually signed up for.

I would argue that a guy who has a radio and is paying attention is more effective than a guy who has a rifle and is paying attention.
It takes a great deal to train a specialist to that level of accuracy and maintain those perishable skills - you don't risk an asset like that with frivolous engagements.

Nothing too crazy happened too often, but when it did I got to see (some) buddies being courageous. I got to run through bullets and do my job despite thinking maybe I'd get shot. I think just knowing I can do that was perhaps the biggest benefit to the military.

Story 1: We are brigade QRF and get called out to some shithole where some guys got rekt by an EFP. An EFP is a charge that can just get through armor no problem. So it nailed their vehicle and they all died. Anyways, they send us out to look at it. Brigade CSM is a huge fucking faggot and he calls up our LT on the radio and tells them to make sure the passengers were wearing their seatbelts because if they aren't using all their safety gear army life insurance isn't supposed to pay out.

Story 2: Get sent on a mission to an Afghan Police building to get some kid. We get the kid. He's like 12. He can't fucking walk because he has been getting raped by old men so much. These are our "allies."

Story 3: We get sent out to some shithole that isn't our normal area. RUMINT is SF gets engaged here all the time. We get in a firefight and the fire is effective enough we can't push forward without probably getting rekt. Our spy plane goes up and says they see a 3 story residential building with ~15 fighters on top of it engaging us. LT asks fire support to blow it up. Battalion commander says no because they aren't supposed to destroy residential structures. That was the day I decided I was done with this shit.

I was a combat correspondent (basically infantry with a higher clearance and I also carried camera and other recording equipment regularly). Combat was pretty scary at first ngl, would give me the bubble guts before leaving the wire, then I got used to it and it just became another job.
