Which country’s heros will you celebrate this Veteran’s Day?
Should Americans who fight for foreign countries’ armies be celebrated for their service to a foreign government when they come back to America?
Can I go enlist in the Iranian Army and get a hero’s welcome when I return to America?
Or maybe I’ll start with a less inflammatory example: What if I enlist in the Argentine Army? Are Americans compelled to celebrate my service to the Argentine government?
What about if I fight for Columbia? South Korea? Russia? North Korea?
Is the principle that you can be an American citizen, enlist in a foreign country’s army instead of the American Army, and still be celebrated as a hero if the foreign country is politically popular with the government at the moment? Because Columbia was literally the US’s top ally in the hemisphere until 9 months ago so that doesn’t seem like a principle that can be consistently applied.
Maybe the principle should be that American citizens can’t fight in foreign countries’ armies and if they do they lose their American citizenship.
