Because our country and cities are huge and public transportation can only get you part of the way where you want to go most of the time. You need a car to access 99% of places even in big cities other than New York.

Public transport is a sign of a developed first world power like Europe. Most americans except for the cities where culture and infrastructure exists are living in third world conditions.
