Nothing stops you from paying down sooner, all the 50-year mortgage would do is mean that your monthly payments are reduced but the length of the loan is extended significantly.

Still a retarded idea and I don't know why banks would agree to a 50-year mortgage because it means either you're planning to be paying your loan into your 80s or 90s or you're just banking that future income will be higher than present income so that in practice the 50-year mortgage is a 30-40 year mortgage which is unreliable.

You get a 50-year, move in, and because you're paying less in mortgage payments you can save money up, keep working, and you build credit, then refinance to a 15-year once you're making bank and have better credit.
