It's all speculation. WW2 found us cracking the Japanese encryption and turning around the war at Midway, long before we expected to have the initiative. If Taiwan doesn't want Chinese rule, they really need to make sure that China does not establish any control over Taiwanese territory. We can kill a lot of Chinese before they ever get ashore, but that would assume that we were waiting for them. Not likely, and not a good idea to attack before any declaration of hostilities.

Just like with Vietnam, we don't want to confuse our honorable intentions with the intentions of rich industrialists. If you have an honorable cause, Americans will eventually join the fight. It was no different than with England in WW2. We could have mostly ignored Hitler's declaration of war but it wasn't going to go away at that point so we got on with it.
