Actually it predates the conventions against chemical weapons. Internment and respect for the dead is some of the oldest parts of the Geneva conventions.

I can see in the midst of some prolonged battle, someone's comrade dies and then just in order to eliminate the stench of the body rotting and disease, they decide to bury it in a temporary grave and then later it can be recovered for a proper burial. But then the person or people that dug this grave and its location might themselves end up being killed, and so no one alive knows this temporary unmarked grave even exists, let alone where it was.
