There was a Nordicist/Anglo preference and the Meds/Latins were seen as lacking certain traits, more driven by passion and emotion than logic (similar to women), and backwards in some ways, but they werent seen as totally alien like Africans. Kind of like today how Western Europeans and Anglo whites still give Slavs or Spaniards/Greeks/Southern Italians a bunch of shit, but would still probably prefer them to a full fledged nigger
