Tolkien's name can sit next to Shakespeare, Goethe, Beethoven, and the many other titans of our past. not only are they brilliant stories, but the world he built was itself amazing. he created languages, theology, races, species, it is truly amazing. the majority of modern fantasy is a direct descendant of Tolkien's creation. he took the old myth's and creatures of europe, fleshed them out and brought them to light in our minds.

Because LOTRs is a great work of fiction, set in an even wider world explored in the Hobbit and the Silmarillion among others. Lord of the rings is the best fantasy movie I've ever watched, with maybe Conan being a close second, NOTHING made after that came even close

I look at other series based on about fantasy books: the witcher, wheel of time, game of thrones - Holywood "people" can't even get the cast right - they sure as hell can't make a good story

Mordor is literally the Ottoman Empire. the epic historical scale matches the reality. even the Battle of Pelinor Fields mirrors the Battle at the Gates of Vienna. the end of the Ottoman Empire was a massive world history moment, like the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Tolkien wrote his middle earth universe in a time when nobody would have believe that there was any chance that their governments would just let the Orcs take over the Shire.

I think the music sold those movies the most, and slaying orcs, because those were seen as standin for shitskins. The story is kind of lame in a western way, different species/races come together to defeat evil, and the story is centered around a couple of midgets.

I guess it's old timey escapism. Trying to think of whom could have been the original target audience of the books. The movies you could get a kick out of for the visuals, and battle scenes, but to read about adventuring midgets doesn't sound appealing in hindsight (I read them all as a kid, but basicly because I had a weird friend who had them, and lent them to me, and it was a popular thing to do at the time, for movie spoilers after seeing the first one, so would not have to wait for the other two).
