Hello frens, Northern lights in Southern California. I’m in the town called Desert Center 92239. Google it. I’m 80 miles from the border and 80 miles from Arizona. This is probably a once in a lifetime event. I took these on an iPhone 12 at a 10 second timer.

While I do live off grid, someday I hope to be a wage slave and pay rent, currently no rent payment, and in the boonies. Oh well, I have this pretty night sky to adore while I suffer.

No idea, but there were aurora as far south as Hawaii about a year ago, or maybe it was at the start of this year.
Before that I think it was like 2006 there were strong storms.
It's not once in a lifetime, but they are more rare the further south you get.

I saw it a couple hours ago with my eyes drove out in cornfield iowa and at times it did look like that. It is pretty light polluted from farmers so it isn't very good can never see milky way like az desert or mountain so I was amazed.
Anyway at times the green went south of me and more than half the entire sky was filled thick bright I've never seen anything like that reminded me of a reverse dome rolling closed at a stadium but made of light. I looked out the back door just now and did see faint red in the far north so it is probably the same if I drove out.

Not once in a lifetime. Last really big one i remember where auroras were visible way down south was in the early 2000s. Really fond childhood memory honestly, formative memory right up there with being taught constellations while watching hale bopp through a family friends big powerful telescope. By all means i hope you enjoyed it but it will in all likelyhood happen again in your lifetime. This one isn't even all that big comparatively speaking. The 2001 one I'm thinking of was apparently more than twice as powerful and there was one more than twice as powerful as that a few years later. Really neat stuff but kind of a nothing burger unless you're invested in putting up satellites and tried to cut costs on shielding. I wish starlink was higher altitude and not so firmly within the magnetosphere. I'd love to see them fry polluting the skys like they do.
