>>18013965You're not wrong. I think more than anything that predates that was how reliant NJPW had become on gaijin. It's always good to have a few strong names around. But between AJ, Cody, Kenny, Switchblade, Ospreay, and even to an extent Mox and Jericho, it felt like New Japan was becoming far too reliant on them during those years. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that those names aren't there to be fixtures on the roster. At absolute best you'll get 5 or so years. Yet NJPW kept devoting their world title scene to them over and over and over and over. Meanwhile Tanahashi, Okada, Naito, Suzuki, etc are all getting older and older and slowing down more and more. So now not only are all the gaijin gone but so are all the Japanese talent and thus Evil becomes world champion
