The truth is he fell in love with the crowd when he started getting cheered as a heel. Instead of sticking to heeling, you know, the thing getting him cheered -- he decided to go babyface and it worked and he was very over for a little bit.
But he went babyface through comedy with the whole Adam Cole thing and while he was doing decent character work, he was also cheapening his top guy appeal. Once you do that and you're very obviously playing for babyface laughs, it's kind of hard to regain your badass top guy mystique.

Very few guys are capable of that

The punk feud, it humanized him which has ruined future heel heat, Phil's fucking need to do worked shoot, blur the lines between kayfabe and real life crap was poison to MJF and never should have been done, especially since MJF is one of the few guys in the buisness who stays in character all the time. Tony doesn't book guys consistently, no one is on every episode of dynamite. When WWE has a star, or at least wants to present someone as a star, they aren't booked every other week.
That said, I don't know if this is Tony's fault, as a booker, he's such a pushover as a boss that guys basically call their own shots. Tony's inverted booking sheet method means he shows the wrestlers his booking plans for the next month instead of for just the single show has led to a lot of abuse by the talent. In theory this should give guys the opportunity to foreshadow their actions but it instead has lead to guys going "well why don't we just film 1 match for tonight's show, and then 5 backstage segments and interviews so I don't have to come back to work until the PPV?"
And also MJF has had a lot of paid vacations either in the middle of a would be push, or right after a big loss when he needed to get some sort of win back.

More like where did it go right. He's positioned on the card far higher than his level of talent warrants. He's paid top money for being a mediocre 5'3 jew.
AEWfags hyped him up and still continue to hype him up because they're desperate for a promo guy. To show that even non big league wrestlers can be good at promos. Unfortunately he's mid at that too, he's like mid 00's Miz tier and never evolved from that.

Tony kept him too strong for too long and hid all of his weaknesses. As soon as they put the belt on him, it exposed him for wrestling the same match all of the time, cutting the same promo over and over again, and just generally being all around mediocre.

The reality with MJF is Tony signed a guy with only 3 years of wrestling experience to a full time contract when he probably should have stayed on the indies for a few more years and gotten some actual experience. Instead he was in AEW and coddled and kept strong for like 3 years, so he was completely exposed as champion and not ready for the spotlight.

He was good in Mexico. But he was exposed a when he became a lonely World Champ with no stable. Take The Pinnacle version of MJF and put him as champ in 2022, with heel FTR, Spears, Wardlow, Tully, defending him and it would've been crazy. Instead, they had solo MJF as a heel champ, because Regal screwed them over and left after helping him get the belt.

This led to face MJF, which killed ALL his mystique. When he was dancing and other crap midmatch with the Skeleton Cole, it killed all of it, for a long, long time. He's only recently seemed to got good again, but it;s not at the same height at all. He needs a crew and they don't have anyone good enough to be his believable lackeys anymore.

MJF simply wasn't ready. I know what I said about Pinnacle MJF, but that's him protected by having a crew around him. Him on his own carrying the company was way too early for him to do. Even guys like Flair almost always made sure they had someone in their corner as the heel champ.
