AEW was/is the cool kids private playground. It was taking these Indy guys and giving them a massive cash injection, making them not have to worry about money or bookings anymore and letting them do whatever they want. Punk is a hard guy to get along with in general. Almost a decade away didn’t change that. The thing is the Boss (Tony) the man who cuts the checks unconditionally loves Punk. It’s his wrestling hero. This made the EVP’s nervous because Punk is the sort of asshole who walks into a room and starts saying things like

He was upsetting the apple cart. Punk needed money bad. He failed at every thing he tried to do outside of wrestling. He doesn’t want to wrestle. So he set out trying to consolidate power right away. Even after the fight, to placate Punk he got his own show basically, which he had been angling for right out of the gate. Also, Colt Cabana made money for a lot of these guys slinging T-Shirts and giving them platforms on his show. That caused some heat right there.

tl;dr Tiny had a boner for Punk and it made the EVP’s scared that things would chang and the money mark would take away some of their power.

Really it was Quackenbush’s partner Reckless Youth, he was THE king of the Indies especially the northeast. They started that promotion together. They brought Punk in back then, he was like the next wave of that and they all rubbed each other the wrong way very very soon. Punk has always been kind of a dickhead. Phil felt very insecure in AEW. He knew he didn't really belong there and he could sense that the boys didn't respect him but he had to be there because of his money issues. Tony had his back and gave him whatever he wanted, but that wasn't enough because Phil was getting rejected by girls backstage and the AEW OGs didn't worship the ground he walked on so his insecurities eventually boiled over in public and he made a play for himself in a power struggle attempt which he eventually lost. The only real question for me is whether Triple H got in his ear and offered him a contract before or after Brawl Out because if it was before, then he was intentionally trying to damage AEW on behalf of WWE, and if it was after, then it was just because of his mental issues. Either way he checked out after the first injury and pretty much new he was WWE bound, and spent a year of Tony trying and failing to persuade him to stay.
