New Wakana interview
https://entamenext.com/articles/detail/39631
>The CanCam audition was the trigger for your entertainment career, right?
>Uehara: Yes, that’s right. Before that, I had gone to hear about agencies and such, but it was after that audition that I seriously started using social media and made up my mind to pursue this path.
>When did you first become interested in the entertainment industry?
>Uehara: Around junior high school. When I was in elementary school, my family hardly ever watched TV. But after I finished my entrance exams for junior high and started going to school, all my friends were excitedly talking about TV shows. That’s when I discovered, “Wow, there’s a world like this!” and I started to admire it.
>I heard you were even scouted in Tokyo?
>Uehara: Yes, once I started going to Tokyo more often after becoming a junior high student, I began getting scouted more. I was surprised, like, “Huh? Me?” But I thought, “If I’m going to do this, I want to do it seriously,” so I researched agencies I liked and started auditioning.
>You were attending an academically competitive junior high, right? Were you good at studying too?
>Uehara: Well… I was really bad at the humanities subjects (laughs). My deviation score in social studies was in the 40s. But I was good at science and math — my math deviation score even exceeded 70 at one point. My junior high entrance exams were also focused on science and math, so I think that’s why it worked out for me.
>You started your entertainment career as an idol, right?
>Uehara: Yes. But originally, I wanted to be an actress, and my dream was to appear in a morning drama (Asadora). I was taking acting lessons, but without name recognition, I couldn’t even get audition invites… I’ve always liked idols too, so I ended up debuting as an idol.
>That said, wasn’t idol life really tough?
>Uehara: It was tough. I was an idol during my university days, living alone in an apartment in Nakano that cost 48,000 yen a month.
>>18095395>My parents were strongly opposed to me working in entertainment, so I searched for the apartment myself, just got their signature for the lease, and pretty much forced my way into it.>That took serious determination.>Uehara: I’ve always been stubborn — once I decide on something, I absolutely see it through. To get my parents to agree, I made a presentation, calculating expected income from idol work, saving enough to live for two years even without a salary, and promising to keep up my university grades… My father was opposed to the end, and I couldn’t even say goodbye when I left home. But he secretly came to my debut live performance, and now he supports me.>Did you receive any financial support from your parents?>Uehara: The group I was in had just been formed at the time, so we hardly received any salary. But I didn’t want to cause my parents any worry or trouble, so I didn’t take any support from them. Still, I was just grateful to be able to perform live, so I kept giving it my all.>How did you manage your daily life?>Uehara: After university classes, I would go to lessons, do live streaming at night, and perform on weekends. I only slept about 3 to 4 hours a day, and during breaks between classes, I was always napping… In my four years of university, I only went out with friends maybe three times (laughs). Looking back, it feels like a missed opportunity, but my mental strength definitely grew.>How much did you save up before living on your own?>Uehara: Around 1.8 million yen.>That’s impressive. What kind of part-time jobs did you do?>Uehara: I worked at photo sessions, sold beer at Yokohama Stadium, and also worked at a kamameshi restaurant. I was juggling three jobs.>That level of determination is incredible. You’re also known for being a big eater — were you always aware of that?>Uehara: Not at all. At the audition for Ariyoshi Seminar, they told me, “Please eat 2kg of curry,” and I thought, “No way, that’s impossible.”
>>18095405>But I ended up eating it like it was nothing (laughs). That’s when I first realized it.>Before that?>Uehara: I liked picking at lots of different foods, but I never ate a massive amount of just one dish.>Yeah, in daily life you don’t really get the chance to eat 2kg of curry. What were you like as a child?>Uehara: I was a picky eater (laughs). My favorite foods were celery, canned peaches, and the parsley growing in my grandmother’s garden! While my cousins were saying, “The flowers are so pretty~,” I’d be yelling, “Parsley~!” and munching on it.>That’s quite unique! (laughs) With all that eating, how do you maintain your figure?>Uehara: I gain weight like anyone else (laughs). Before important photo shoots, I adjust how much I eat. But maybe my background in swimming and cheerleading helps too. I did swimming from elementary school all the way through high school, and I was on the cheerleading team in junior high and high school as well.>Cheerleading has a pretty tough image.>Uehara: It was super intense! It was a hardcore athletic environment, with strict seniority rules, and the training camps were brutal. Carrying people on your back and sprinting up hills, stair runs, crazy muscle training… Everyone was chugging energy drinks (laughs).>Sounds like the mental toughness you developed back then is still with you now.>Uehara: That’s probably true. There were auditions to decide who would make the competition team, so I think that’s when I became so competitive.>I heard your start in professional wrestling was through the "Yume Pro-Wrestling" project?>Uehara: Yes. It was a project where your dream would come true if you ranked first, so I joined with the mindset of “let’s give it a try.” At the time, audition-based shows were starting to gain popularity, and I wanted to experience that too.>Weren’t you scared or hesitant about wrestling?
>>18095370>>18095383Kira please tell Chika that she's really cool.
>>18095415>Uehara: Of course, I was worried about injuries, but my desire to take on the challenge was stronger than that. My family was worried though, asking, “Isn’t it dangerous?”>There was a scene in the show where you were moved to tears by Aja Kong’s words.>Uehara: That moment really hit me… I cried so much (laughs).>What did she say to you?>Uehara: She told me, “If you stay like this, nothing will get through to people.” I felt like that didn’t just apply to wrestling, but to my entertainment activities as a whole. At the time, I was embarrassed about everything I did and couldn’t fully commit. Hearing those words made me realize, “I have to change.” After that, I started approaching everything with the mindset of “I’m basically a comedian,” throwing myself completely into whatever I did.>Why did you decide to continue with wrestling even after the project ended?>Uehara: I ranked first overall, but in the final match in front of the audience, I finished second, and that really frustrated me. I had been thinking about wrestling non-stop for six months, and the idea of it all ending made me feel empty. At first, I didn’t plan to continue, but when I really thought about it, I realized wrestling had saved me. That’s why I decided to continue with proper determination.>You also took on gravure shoots with a “fighting woman” theme after that.>Uehara: I had done gravure shoots for FRIDAY and ASCII during my idol days, but that was about it. To be honest, I’m not heavily involved in gravure now either, but if I get offers, I’m definitely up for it! (laughs)>Wrestling costumes tend to be quite revealing too. Did you have any hesitation about wearing swimsuits?>Uehara: Since wrestling outfits already show quite a bit, I wasn’t too hesitant. But during my idol days, I didn’t want to post pictures on social media where my face looked weird or my body shape showed too much. Now, I’ve completely moved past that.
>>18095430>During matches, there are moments when my eyes roll back or I make scary faces, but I’ve come to accept that as part of who I am. Back then, I would’ve hated it, but now I realize, “People actually don’t care as much as I thought.”>I heard you originally had insecurities about your body.>Uehara: My biggest insecurity has always been my thick legs. I hit puberty early — by sixth grade I was already around 161 to 162 cm tall. I had a developed chest and body, so I was often mistaken for a high school student. With a backpack on, I looked like I was doing cosplay (laughs).>So you’ve been facing that insecurity for a long time.>Uehara: During my idol days, I absolutely hated showing my legs. I even dropped my weight down to 38 kilograms.>38 kilograms!? That’s extremely thin.>Uehara: Yeah, I was skin and bones. I didn’t have much money either, so I thought, “If I can save money and lose weight, it’s a win-win.” But I got tired easily, my face looked gaunt… and my legs didn’t get as slim as I had hoped. That’s why I’ve gained the weight back now.>Meeting pro-wrestling changed your mindset?>Uehara: Exactly. I started getting compliments like, “Your thick legs are awesome!” and that completely boosted my self-esteem. Now I believe it’s better to focus on enhancing your strengths rather than trying to “fix” your flaws to be average. Without pro-wrestling, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.>You’re active across different fields: competitive eating, gravure modeling, and wrestling. What motivates you?>Uehara: At my core, I just love working. I feel like if I lost my work, I’d lose everything. Also, I love the moment when I’m standing in front of people and can sense their reactions. Feeling like I’m influencing others makes me feel truly alive.>Now that you’re 29, what are your goals moving forward?
>>18095443>Uehara: I want people to immediately think of “Wakana Uehara” when they hear “competitive eater and pro-wrestler.” I also want to grow my name recognition. Right now, I have around 100,000 followers across social media, but I want to double that to 200,000 within the next year. Numbers aren’t everything, but the more people who see me, the more chances I’ll have.>I heard you’ve been wrestling internationally too?>Uehara: Yes, I had matches in Seattle and Las Vegas this year. My overseas fanbase is slowly growing, and it makes me so happy. I never really thought about going abroad before, but since I started wrestling, I’ve become more aware of the world. I truly believe “pro-wrestling is full of dreams.”>From the start, you’ve aimed for international success, haven’t you?>Uehara: Being able to wrestle overseas now is thanks to the people in my wrestling promotion and my seniors. I’m really grateful. I want to have even more matches abroad, and I’d love to take on competitive eating events overseas too. I’m also studying English, but both competitive eating and wrestling can transcend language barriers. Through videos, I want to gain even more fans worldwide.>Finally, tell us about your plans as you head into your 30s.>Uehara: As long as my body allows it, I want to keep wrestling. It’s a place where you can stay active regardless of age, and as long as people support me, I believe I can keep chasing my dreams. I want to continue being true to myself, having fun, and working hard.

match was ok-ish, didn't like the wwe type of cuts for some of the moves and finish looked botched. Yuki's promo was a nothing burger saying "thank you" while awkwardly leaving the ring
>>18096407For a second I thought I was watching a Japanese version of Taken. The camera work was awful. I feel like they were doing it because they didn't have faith in Kamiyu and Wakana, but their match was better than the previous two
it could have been worse, could have been a janai kai match
not everyone can be shoko
>>18096582basically a rerun of their previous matches but worse and with a crowd that wasn't that interested. match ended early when wakana kicked out of kamiyu's front fameasser thing way too late, because she isn't used to the cadence of non japanese refs. they both got a bouquet of flowers after the match for some reason. shitzi brapshart came out and cut a very wwe style promo praising kamiyu and saying she wanted to have a match with her. kamiyu's accent was completely different from usual and she spoke in broken english. then some other woman came out and set up a match with shitzi while kamiyu awkwardly left the ring

commentary for a FACE show? how unusual
>>18096737god, I love Kamiyu
Wakana's aura was significantly diminished without a few people in the crowd screaming her name. I'm afraid that she does not possess "it" after all, but she could acquire "it" by getting them out
Wakana looked lost from the moment she got in that ring and cowered in the corner and the camera just cut back and forth from wide to closeup of her just cowered waiting for Kamiyu to come out.
i am still desirous of fumirin merch
How can someone who reached the top of the JPOP charts still be so uneasy in front of a crowd?
Imma be generous with Wakana and say she was jet lagged and dehydrated, she still would not have torn up the ring like Kaiju but would not have been as bad as this. She probably pigged out for a video a couple hours before the match and hadn’t taken a shit and was also sluggish.

Kamiyu is someone who was a shitter once, too. And she worked hard and became solid/good.
Wakana should look to at least emulate that part of her career.
It wasn't even that bad. You wouldn't know the finish was botched unless you're a regular TJPW viewer.
>>18098014the difference is that kamiyu was a shitter because she put in 0 effort and hated wrestling. wakana apparently tries very hard and loves wrestling, which makes her lack of improvement pretty alarming
>>18098026With her dance background and athleticism, you'd think this would come more naturally to her. Maybe the fans gassing her up are distracting her and making her focus on the wrong stuff, like her social media presence and gymnastics routines rather than ring work.
