>As expected, Yota Tsuji's words were sharp as ever. Backstage in Nagoya on June 29th, he bluntly declared:"President Tanahashi, how about we stop calling it a 'Double Main Event'? It's disrespectful to the wrestlers fighting in the semi-main. If you trace it back, the 'Double Main Event' that left the strongest impression on me was your Intercontinental match with Nakamura. Youโ€™re the one who should bring this to an end." He was referring to January 4th, 2014, at the Tokyo Dome. Back then, the match order between the IWGP Heavyweight Championship (Kazuchika Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito) and the IWGP Intercontinental Championship (Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi) was decided by fan vote. Although it was officially called a "Double Main Event," the Intercontinental title match ended up being the final bout of the night. By bringing up that history, Tsuji pressed Tanahashi to abolish the concept of the "Double Main Event."
>Fans who actually watched this "Double Main Event" probably understand: regardless of the match order, the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match between Hirooki Goto and Zack Sabre Jr. produced a "top-tier battle," standing out by far in terms of pure match quality at the June 29th Nagoya event. At the same time, Tanahashi emphasized the event's overall concept by taking the final slot on the card. His intentions were clear โ€” the collaborative moment with Naomichi Marufuji during the finish brought great excitement to the arena. In the end, "both were good," no question. However, that doesnโ€™t mean Tsujiโ€™s argument should be ignored. The issue originated with this year's two events in the United States, where the so-called "Double Main Event" saw the IWGP World Heavyweight title placed in the semi-main spot. At the root of Tsuji's stance lies his skepticism toward holding events in the U.S. in the first place.

>โ€œIn America, where we have to compete with WWE and AEW, holding shows in venues of that quality, with hardly any New Japan wrestlers appearing โ€” you canโ€™t really call that a โ€˜New Japanโ€™ event. Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m trying to say.โ€ Whenever Tsuji makes such statements, people tend to draw comparisons to Tetsuya Naito, but Tsujiโ€™s mindset is different. โ€œItโ€™s not like Iโ€™m copying Naito-san or trying to carry on his legacy. Iโ€™m just speaking my own thoughts. One example of that is the volunteer work I did in Indonesia.โ€ In May, Tsuji visited Bogor, Indonesia, where he donated Lion T-shirts to people in impoverished communities and interacted with children living in rural villages. At the time, he was still holding the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship, and the championship belt brought joy to the kids. From the start, Tsuji has been advocating for expanding New Japanโ€™s shows in the Asian region even more than in America. Why Asia and not America? As mentioned earlier, the main factor is the competitive environment where โ€œwe have to go up against WWE and AEW.โ€ In other words, to draw large audiences like WWE does, you have to be able to match them in terms of scale and production value. If you canโ€™t achieve that, how will American fans perceive New Japan when it comes to town? Heโ€™s been envisioning this reality in a country where people casually consume those massive shows. โ€œIf weโ€™re going to run shows in America, at the very least, the setup and production need to be more extravagant, so the venue doesnโ€™t feel second-rate in comparison.โ€

>โ€œJust look at WWE โ€” you can see how much excitement their entrances generate. We have to start being conscious of those aspects too. I understand that New Japan puts a lot of effort into the matches themselves, but when in Rome, do as the Romans do. You have to follow the local customs first, and then showcase your strengths.โ€ But thereโ€™s also the question: โ€œIs that even realistic?โ€ Thatโ€™s precisely why Tsuji believes Asia is the better option. โ€œI think it makes more sense to challenge ourselves in the untapped parts of Asia. The costs are probably lower, and pro wrestling is all about emotion. I believe that when Asians see fellow Asians striving and putting in the effort, it resonates more deeply. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ve been suggesting from the start that we shouldnโ€™t only focus on America, but look toward those regions as well.โ€ Nothing starts without action โ€” his trip to Indonesia was that first step. Tsuji feels a strong sense of urgency. โ€œItโ€™s not just me โ€” I think all the wrestlers in the company need to feel this sense of crisis. After COVID ended, the only thing left behind in the world of sports entertainment and professional sports is pro wrestling. Look at professional baseball โ€” the stadiums are packed. Basketball too, itโ€™s booming. But what about pro wrestling? We havenโ€™t even managed to return to pre-COVID levels. Thatโ€™s a problem we, as wrestlers and as a company, need to tackle with a real sense of crisis. And how many wrestlers truly feel the same way I do?โ€ Tsuji shows no intention of backing down from voicing his opinions.

wwe and tna have tried this in the past but they failed. they should sign jinder and bollywood boys. rocky romero should be replaced with the great khali. reminder that khali is a former new japan guy. wrestling is popular in india already unlike indonesia.

I grew up in Indonesia (that's a shoot, brother) and at least back in the 90s no one spoke about wrestling, not even the other expat kids.
The locals fucking love motorcycles and Japanese moto companies send MotoGP racers down there to shill their latest scooter or 125cc bike and they're treated like heroes. If NJPW wants the Indonesia market (which is huge, btw) they need to do some kind of cross-event with Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki or give someone a motorcycle racer gimmick.

Anyway I'll always love that country and I had a semi-pro soccer career back home thanks to playing it every evening with the local kids. I wish nothing but the best for them.

There is an urban elite in Jakarta etc. but yeah I get what you mean.
Singapore market is dominated by ONE and I don't see that changing. I've been to a couple of ONE shows in Singapore and Thailand and they're events the urban elite mentioned above want to be seen at. Wrestling definitely not on their radar. They're kind of dumb and just go to things because they're expensive or because X celebrity went to Y event once.
I know there's a small wrestling promotion in Singapore but it doesn't move any tickets or draw any S$s.

>their religion seems to all be lip service
Elites in all countries are working when it comes to religion, morality etc. They keep kayfabe well enough that the masses shoot believe the shit they're fed.
When kayfabe breaks you get coups and revolutions in these parts of the world.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of Okada?
Ever since his push started over a decade ago I've been baffled.
>Skinnyfat body that's somehow worse that CM Punk's
>An arrogant young upstart with no redeeming qualities
>becomes an arrogant older wrestler still with no redeeming qualities
>can't talk
>Some WOAT ringwear
>balloon Okada was just embarassing
>same match structure in all singles matches
>slow build for first 20-25 minutes apparently focusing on X body part
>then suddenly a mad dash ballroom dance routine as people do sillier and sillier things to stop/block/counter the Rainmaker while completely forgetting to sell the worked bodypart we've just wasted 20 mins on
>moves awkwardly in the ring and has never improved on it
>looks like he doesn't know where to put his arms at all times so runs around like a frightened schoolgirl even when he's trying to look tough (seriously once you notice you can't unsee)
>gets 6/7* from Big Dave
>Goes to AEW and does nothing but make a fool of himself apparently.

I just don't fucking get it. The only good match he had before I stopped watched his dreck was with Shibata and I can't even enjoy that because Shibata was a retard and ended his career in it, thus removing the last watchable element of modern day nu-Japan.
It's like some mass delirium or emperor's new clothes situation where everyone is/was too scared to point out how shitty and boring Okada matches were lest they get run off the internet.

Can someone please fucking explain?

to be fair the same match structure criticism can be said for most wrestlers right now, that's a huge problem in modern wrestling. but yeah okada was very overrated and his selling was complete shit. one of the biggest examples of that is his match against zack at sakura genesis in 2018. zack spent like literally the whole fucking match working on okada's right arm, all that to take a rainmaker and lose anyway. he also got exposed real hard everytime he didn't have the world title. he has no personality besides "i'm le yummy strong champion".

But he didn't even get that right! He never looked like he belonged in a wrestling ring in my opinion. There was/is something so awkward about him and the way he moves and holds himself.

Long epics were always more of an All Japan thing. I loved New Japan because of the hosses bleeding everywhere in matches usually less than 20 minutes. Okada never really appealed to me after loving Hashimoto.

this is a problem across wrestling as a whole. even amongst guys who tend to sell a limb, they'll do the 'slap a body part do a big move' thing just randomly instead of building to that big move being a finish or a momentum shift then go back to selling
i wish more guys watched steve austins wwf rise rather than his champion run. austin was all about selling until he got the belt and realized two middle fingers were more powerful than any wrestling move ever devised

I mean I'm not gonna argue against his ability but I can agree on match structure and little "Okada-isms". Like that last G1, like every match had him lead his opponent around outside early, then ddt them on the floor and then commentary acting like he's some kind of ring general genius for this.
