There's always been weirdos and stalkers. If anything the reason it stands out now is because there are less of them per fandom so when they do finally pop up, it's more apparent (helped by media coverage of anything to keep us scared and divided).
Trolls talking shit online has never affected this outcome. There are more of those trolls, because there's more people online and society is way more grim, and assholes feed them now instead of ignoring them. But they're still just pathetic trolls.
