Am I crazy or is the Undertaker (at least in his american badass/attitude era time) completely overrated?

>has a completely played out post-kane 'master of darkness' storyline, his wrestling skills are lacking
>takes a long break for recovery
>comes back as the american badass, completely butches the Judgement Day main event finish by not interrupting the count on time
>has 0 charisma as a badass honestly, his phrases are like what a good guy pretending to be bad would say
>has the shittiest match ever against kurt angle, is still sluggish af in the ring and overall not impressive at all

Does the undertaker get better later, or were his early years the peak and he's just been cruising on his reputation since? I'm watching every match, starting from 98' onwards (at 2000 now) and don't get the hype

He was hated online during that tine until around 2005 or so when he started having better matches.

his shitty podcast and annoying wife are ruining the aura he had

Can someone explain that as well? How do you from being a complete shitter for 14 years to eventually having great matches for the next 8 years?

WWE propaganda

He wasn't a complete shitter, he was just a B+ guy. Good enough to hold the strap for a short time but never "the guy". That was his whole career. His "legend" status was like >>18240345 said, WWE propaganda. They do the same thing with Triple H and to an extent, with HBK.

A lot of it is propaganda so people just pop for him doing his signature moves.

Also WWE entered an era where the crowd went crazy for finisher spam, so he started to do that

WOAT in the ring but that stops mattering when you've been around long enough

Nearly everything Taker did prior to reviving his Deadman gimmick in 2004/2005 fucking sucked no matter how much people who only became fans of him during that era try to rewrite history.

HHH is imo a much better wrestler than taker. He had some legit epic matches during the attitude era, like his matches with mankind

In the late 2000s I definitely preferred watched Taker over Hunter.

It's funny how they managed to convince people that the old school isn't the corniest shit ever and fits his character about as well as a tornado hurricanrana.

you're crazy mate
>retirement match with mick foley
>1 hour ironman match with rock
>funny skits with Stephanie about their marriage
Guys was legit the top man at the time

Same, Haitch could have a decent match every once in a while but most of the time he was a painfully formulaic wrestler. The best thing he had going for him was always his entrance, and you can clearly tell when he started being more in charge of creative by how many wrestlers who have nothing noteworthy about them except a cool entrance have popped up over the years.

Trump is on the Epstein list. Pat Patterson molested ringboys. Vince pooped on people.

More like UnderCHUDster

I loved the biker bussy gimmick but maybe that's more so because I was a kid at that time. I will admit that his promos weren't the best though.

His spooky character done alot of the heavy lifting for him. When he was the ABA he didn't really find his groove with it until turning heel in 2002 (and somehow his ring work was alot better at this time too after being sluggish as fuck throughout the invasion and stuck in lame DDP feud and tag hell with Kane) IMO.

Character is everything.
The Undertaker character made him in the 90s.
The American Badass was a breaker. It was necessary, especially since the Phenom was getting stale after 9 uninterrupted years of matches and promos, but most people didn't like the gimmick.
It took the supernatural away and made him look and wrestle like one of those biker dudes in the DOA during the gang wars phase of 1997.
That said, it made the resurrection of the Deadman all the more wonderful.

He lost weight, which was the main factor, then started incorporating MMA shit so his matches weren't the usual slog when he was doing his boring matches zombie gimmick. He actually did improve. Still overrated compared to peers like Eddie or Christian.

I wish his American Badass phase retained elements of the Deadman. Like he should have been Ghost Rider instead of some wannabe biker gang larper nerd in gay pants.
Anonymous No.18241687
I thought he went downhill as soon as he dropped the deadman gimmick. That was peak Undertaker, and he pulled it off perfectly. I don't know why he dropped the character everyone liked and started LARPing as a biker. The deadman gimmick would have probably worked better for an older wrestler than trying to pretend like he's the leader of the Hell's Angels or something.
