The problem is that her gimmick was so intertwined with Toni and their storyline that when she was on her own during the time Toni was away, she kind of floundered. Of course, it wasn't entirely Mariah's fault; Tony didn't seem to know what to do with her during that period.

He's letting Toni down with the current schtick. She's still a fucking kino machine though, just look at her last night.

Based. They can never take that part away. In a way I'm glad May left when she did because that ensured that there's no chance of that ever being able to be fucked with. Their story is completed and perfectly boxed away on a shelf. For all the shit she's catching about being in NXT or the new name and gimmick I think she saw the writing on the wall for what the booking would look like once their story was done. And that worked in part due to the nature of her contract and the remaining time on it, so the beginning and end of Mariah's time in AEW revolved around her feud with Toni, and it was great. Now all that's left are women already established on the roster with characters and identities of their own, ensuring that there will never be the same level of dedication that there was in the Toni/Mariah storyline.

And that's why marina got put with the death riders and was on tv every week. It's amazing how many of them don't get it and then bitch about not getting tv time, earn it, prove you want it, I remember when AEW started Tony said he wanted wrestlers to do Indy bookings and create their own buzz, and the people who do that get consistent tv time like Skye and Willow. You got all those guys like the bucks and mox and Kenny who have tons of connections with different Indy promotions, offering and willing to help but some people are just fucking lazy and then are shocked when other people get booked for dynamite and they don't

This is just my two cents: He struggles when there's nothing to play off when there's "just a match", especially when it's a new act or someone.
They played off the history of Toni's ghosts. Shida was arguably responsible for driving her nuts and they were rivals or like a year or two, Deonna was her ex best friend and a "roommate", Thunder Rosa fucked her over. Say what you want about the matches, but the stories themselves were perfectly fine. Mariah is Mariah, enough said. You can work with that. And then we just had all these minor callbacks and who's the real GOAT shit with Mercedes. Not interesting to me but it's an easy story to tell.
Now he's running out of shit. There's one ghost story to tell with Jamie but she's injured and cold as hell and there's one obvious story that they seem hellbent on not telling which is that Kris Statlander beat "Rookie" Toni Storm before she got the belt back. Why not tell that story instead of this neverending frenemies with Willow? I mean shit they're "lucky" that Mina just got injured and they've got something to play off with Athena because otherwise what the fuck else do they have going for it? Don't even get me started on the rest of the roster.
I know people are hating how she's getting Flanderized but at the end of the day, Toni can work on autopilot for a bit. The rest of the division is where creative help is desperately needed.
