>Can DOOM conquer the cursed summer?
>All Japan Pro Wrestling’s Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion Saito Jun (38) is fired up to overcome his seasonal struggle.

>Jun is staring down a brutal “midsummer tour.”
>First up is his V6 defense against Honda Ryuki at the July 21 show in Edion Arena Osaka's second stadium.
>If he wins, he’ll go on to face the winner of the same show’s number one contender match—Aoyagi Yuma vs Davey Boy Smith Jr.—in a V7 defense in early August.

>Jun is determined to win both matches:
>“First, I’m gonna crush Honda Ryuki. I’ve had it with him stealing my sweets all the time—it’s infuriating.
>And I’m winning again next, no matter who shows up.”
>But one concern remains: his aversion to summer.
>It’s said he doesn’t handle heat well, and this year’s sweltering weather has already cost him 5 kg.

>“How do you know my weight?” Jun laughed, then admitted:
>“Well, no point hiding it—I’m not good with summer.
>My brother’s the same. Back in our sumo days, Rei and I would just wilt together in the July Nagoya tournament…”
>Indeed, he struggled in that event, recording three straight losing records from 2013.
>Perhaps it’s the downside of carrying such an enormous frame.

>And this year, the stress is even worse thanks to Honda’s repeated “snack theft.”
>“Even when I’m trying to sneak in a treat during mountain training, I catch myself looking over my shoulder—like Honda might be there,” Jun said.
>“And then I dreamed he stole my manju. Unforgivable.” He was shaking with rage.

>Still, he’s fighting back:
>reportedly eating around 10 umeboshi a day—local specialties from his hometown of Kakuda—for nourishment and to spark his appetite.
>At the July 17 Korakuen show, Jun clashed fiercely with Honda in an 8-man tag.
>Will the power of plums help him finally overcome summer?

>*It’s a long post, but I’d be grateful if you gave it a read.*

>Since the beginning of the year, GLEAT has been operating with the core philosophy of
>“building the GLEAT ring with GLEAT’s own wrestlers.”
>Now that the January–June figures are finalized,
>we’ve managed—just barely—to exceed the previous year’s revenue, reaching 100.4%.

>We still have a long way to go before we’re fully self-sufficient,
>but we’ve also been able to significantly reduce investment costs.

>This is all entirely thanks to you—our customers and fans.
>From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

>On July 1, we entered our fifth year by returning to our roots.
>Right now, I know we may be causing some concern among our supporters.
>But as always, all I can do is believe in GLEAT.

>We’ll continue to hold wrestler-led shows through the second half of the year,
>with the goal of building greater self-reliance.
>And from what I hear, plenty of surprises are in store as well.

>At the July 24 event, I believe we’ll deliver the full spectrum of “GREAT” emotion—
>in-ring action, of course, but also GLEAT-style announcements
>for those attending in person and watching via YouTube Membership.

>As we move through the second half of 2025,
>I humbly ask for your continued support, viewership, and excitement for all things GLEAT.

>Truly, thank you—always.

>**P.S.**
>To the wrestlers, staff, and employees who’ve shown unwavering dedication in the face of adversity,
>working tirelessly to bring joy to our fans and guests—
>my deepest respect and heartfelt thanks to you all.

>#GLEAT

It is a comedy fed. Don't know if the rest of you have noticed or not, but there's been a blatant shift in Japanese wrestling as a whole. They're moving more towards comedy everywhere.

Yes it's always existed, but now it's even infecting the top card stuff. Usually in places like All Japan you'd just see it in the old man tag matches. Now they're just DDT lite.

I remember that Shiozaki vs. Doering match. This happened around the time when Jun Akiyama was in charge. A lot of people point to this match as the turnaround for All Japan after the Wrestle-1 Exodus and Nobuo Shiraishi's terrible leadership. Akiyama's All Japan from 2015-2017 received a lot of well deserved high praise.

He turned 40 in 1990 and arguably had a better career after that. It's insane the run he had during an era where most 40 year old wrestlers were broken down. 40 years old in the modern era is the new 30 if anything.

>【AJPW】Jun Saito achieves V6 with DOOM against Ryuki Honda—Next up is Yuma Aoyagi in Matsumoto: "It’s like I wandered into a world of cheese!"

>At AJPW’s Osaka show on the 21st, Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion Jun Saito (38) successfully defended his title for the sixth time, defeating Ryuki Honda (25).

>The match kicked off with intense action. Honda, who had repeatedly "stolen sweets" leading up to the match, had Saito fuming from the start. As soon as the bell rang, Saito charged and smashed Honda into the barricades outside the ring multiple times. But Honda, aiming for his first title, fought back with fierce lariats and a release German suplex on the apron.

>Neither man gave an inch as the match progressed, but in the closing stretch, Saito stopped Honda’s momentum with a slap and a lariat. He then hurled him with a Jackhammer, followed by a Dying Light kick to the face. Honda kicked out at two, but Saito finished it with the Days Gone—lifting Honda in a brainbuster position before slamming him down with a chokebomb.

>After the match, Saito took the mic and said to Honda, “Today’s match was incredibly intense. I was so blinded by rage after you stole my sweets, but that all blew away in today’s fiery match. You’re loud and full of energy, but you’re a straightforward wrestler who gives everything he's got. I’m glad we had this match. Let’s do it again sometime.”

>Then came the customary sweet treat segment. Saito picked up a cheesecake, took a bite, and exclaimed, “Delicious. The richness of the cheese and the sweetness just soak into my body. It’s like I wandered into a world of cheese!” The crowd in Osaka roared with laughter. When Honda, looking frustrated, approached, Saito teasingly said, “I’m not giving you any!”

>But then chants of “Give him some!” erupted from the audience. Saito relented, saying, “Sweets taste better when shared,” and handed Honda a piece of cheesecake. Honda smiled and exited the ring. Saito called out after him, “Don’t go stealing sweets anymore!”

>That’s when Yuma Aoyagi appeared. Earlier that day, Aoyagi had defeated Davey Boy Smith Jr. in a number one contender’s match. He addressed Saito: “I know I’m just the challenger, but I have one request. Could I have my title shot in my hometown?”

>Saito replied, “I’m really glad you came out here. But are you sure? If you lose to me in Matsumoto, you’re going to be humiliated in front of your hometown. Still, if you're okay with that, I’ll accept. Yuma Aoyagi—DOOM.”

NOAH's booking is too bad so it'll never happen.

But if anyone was going to try and topple New Japan, it's now. If they got their shit together this is the moment to do it. They won't, but still.

A babyface Ozawa, semi regular Naito, Go's return and big KENTA defenses? They have good stuff in the pipeline. Plus they have the production and money to look on par with New Japan.

A big problem though is Kaito has been irreversibly damaged over the years. I don't know what's going on with Yuma Anzai, but him jumping could be another bit of gas.

Inoki's death hit me really hard. Getting old is hard enough but people dying you'd think would be around forever just feels weird.

One rough patch isn't enough to kill NJPW. Plus in Japan usually you're loyal to whatever promotion you like and watch it no matter how good or bad it is. Often times NJPW fans aren't watching NOAH and NOAH fans aren't watching NJPW.

While that's true, I'm still surprised nobody's at least trying with how vulnerable NJPW is right now. And there's no light at the end of the tunnel for them either. They've just been kicking the can down the road.

Like NOAH will never be #1 but this is about as much of an opportunity as they'll ever get to really recover.

I guess the language barrier is a problem too. Is anyone capable of even bringing in new fans at all in Japan?

non-wrestling celebrities, which is why njpw are hyping up aaron wolf so much. kaisei takechi brought a lot of new fans to ddt, but the problem there is most of them only show up when he does, which right now is only a few times per year
