>Diagnosed with a traumatic cervical spine injury, “Muscle Monster” Daisuke Sekimoto (44, freelance) made his return after nearly two months at BJW’s July 27 Korakuen Hall event. It was also his first match since leaving the promotion at the end of June to go freelance—and he marked both with a victory, while revealing his intention to retire at age 50.

>On May 29, Sekimoto was injured mid-match and rendered immobile, prompting an emergency hospital transport. “I was scared, like—what’s going to happen to me now?” he recalled. His bench press dropped from 180kg to 140kg at one point, but his recovery progressed well. Two months later, he returned to the ring, teaming with Takashi Daimonji to face Ryuji Ito and Abdullah Kobayashi. Once the bell rang, he showed no sign of injury or ring rust, unleashing his trademark raw power—and finishing the match with back-to-back lariats on Kobayashi.

>After the match, Ito congratulated him on his return. Kobayashi, however, took a rougher tone, saying, “I’ve seen plenty of guys leave this place. I’ve got no more tears left to shed.” Sekimoto, listening in a kneeling posture, replied, “It’s not like we’ll never see each other again. Is it okay if I come back someday?” The crowd responded with a loud ovation.

>Backstage, he declared, “I’ll retire at 50.” The decision was inspired by the phrase “Life is fifty years,” a favorite of warlord Oda Nobunaga, and something Sekimoto decided when he first began wrestling. “Honestly, my physical strength is fading, and I’ve got more aches and issues showing up. Fifty might be the limit,” he admitted.

>As a freelancer, he hopes to spend the next six years wrestling in a variety of places and against many different opponents. But as for overseas appearances? “I have a daughter. I can’t just leave my family behind,” he said, ruling that out. His future schedule is still undecided: “Am I waiting for offers? Yeah, you could say that.”

>Thank you so much for today! Your cheers really meant the world to me!
>I’m glad I was able to walk off the BJW ring on my own two feet.
>By the way… it wasn’t a retirement announcement—more like, “Maybe I’ll retire at 50?”
>Sorry if I didn’t phrase it clearly enough.
>I don’t know what the future holds, but I still want to enjoy pro wrestling for a long time to come.

>Former NJPW stars Tetsuya Naito (43) and BUSHI (42) marked their first match as freelancers with a victory at RPW’s Wolverhampton event on the 25th (Japan time: 26th).

>Naito and BUSHI left New Japan after the May 4 Fukuoka show and launched a new unit together: “Los Tranquilos de Japon” (LTJ).

>In their first match back in about two and a half months, they teamed up to face Mark Trew and Kieron Lacey. As they walked the ramp to brand-new entrance themes, they were greeted with a thunderous ovation from the UK crowd. After hitting a tandem buster, Naito landed his signature Destino for the win. The two bumped fists in the ring afterward.

>Speaking to this paper after the match, Naito opened with: “It’s been so long since my last match, I’m exhausted…”—sounding quite *cansado*. Still, he reflected, “Over the past two and a half months, I’ve been preparing and launching LTJ. It reminded me of when I brought Los Ingobernables to Japan. It feels like the beginning of something new.”

>Since leaving NJPW, Naito has undergone eye surgery and maintenance on his knee. “As for my knee, maybe because I hadn’t been wrestling, there wasn’t any pain or swelling. It moved well. My eye… well, there are good things and not-so-good things about it, but it’s the eye I’ve got, and I’ll be living with it. I’ve accepted it, and I want to raise LTJ up alongside this eye,” he said, revealing both his condition and his ambition.

>Naito and BUSHI are also scheduled to appear at RPW’s Sheffield event on the 27th (Japan time: 28th), before returning to Japan. “Still, to think I had to stay on the phone with you guys until this time—what is it, 5 a.m. over here? I guess I owe Tokyo Sports a big one now. Which means when I get back to Japan…” he began to say—only for the call to suddenly drop due to poor signal.

Tokyo Sports from when he got the surgery in May:

>On the 8th, Tetsuya Naito (42), who left NJPW on the 4th, was discharged from a hospital in Kanagawa after undergoing surgery on his *right* eye. Ahead of his freelance activities, Naito had expressed a desire to focus on physical maintenance and had originally planned to undergo surgery on his left eye, which has long been affected by strabismus. However, in an unusual twist, the procedure was suddenly changed to operate on his right eye instead. So what exactly happened?

>Since 2019, Naito had been suffering from diplopia (double vision) caused by impaired function of the superior oblique muscle, which pulls the eye inward and downward. He had previously undergone three surgeries on his right eye and one on his left. This time, he checked into the hospital on the 7th intending to have a second surgery on his left eye.

...

>His left-right field of vision had already improved after the surgery on his left eye late last year. This latest procedure was meant to adjust vertical and horizontal alignment. However, after reexamining him, the doctor concluded that rather than operating on the left eye, it would be best to perform a recession and half-belly inferior displacement of the right medial rectus muscle.

>It was previously believed that only three surgeries could safely be done on the right eye, but depending on the technique, a fourth (or more) is possible. “They explained that there are different ways to go about it, and that really reassured me,” Naito said. Still, a wrestler undergoing four surgeries on one eye is almost unheard of. “I mean, how many wrestlers out there have had surgery on the same eye four times? Might be a Guinness World Record, right? I’m actually thinking about applying seriously. I’m a freelancer now, after all—got flexibility,” he joked while begging for a stop at a McDonald’s drive-thru along the way.

>Shinjuku FACE, known as a pro wrestling venue, will celebrate its 20th anniversary on July 31 with a special event titled “milestone,” featuring 23 wrestlers from 8 different promotions. In advance of the event, Yukaka Ogawa (51), who oversees the venue, reflected on its history and shared a few unexpected stories about the ring.

>Ogawa, a manager at Humax Entertainment (which runs Shinjuku FACE), has been there from the beginning—joining in June 2005 just before it opened. “It used to be a venue called Liquidroom,” she recalled, “and the renovations to turn it into a wrestling space with a ring were just underway at the time.”

>The venue officially opened on July 29, 2005. The debut event was “W-FACE,” a joint card of women’s MMA and pro wrestling, featuring five MMA bouts and one wrestling match. The wrestler on that debut card? Mayumi Ozaki—who’s also booked for the 20th anniversary show, teaming with HARASHIMA and Yukio Naya against Shin Hirota Sakura, Antonio Honda, and Soshi Shoda w/ Sanshiro Takagi. “The only people involved in both the opening and the 20th anniversary might just be me and Ozaki-san,” Ogawa said with emotion.
Anonymous No.18390694 [Report]
>>18390690
>Interestingly, the ring used today isn’t the original—it’s the second version. “The ceiling isn’t that high here, so the first ring was a little lower,” Ogawa explained. “That was to help wrestlers fly off the top rope safely and give the audience a better view.” But before long, it was replaced with a regulation-height ring. “Wrestlers and fans said, ‘Wouldn’t it be better if it were a bit taller?’ so we switched it.”

>If you’ve been to Shinjuku FACE, you’ve probably noticed how close the ceiling feels to the top rope. You might even worry a moonsault would hit it. But surprisingly, no one ever has. “Wrestlers have amazing spatial awareness,” said Ogawa. “No one’s ever hit the ceiling. The only thing that’s ever touched it was Aja Kong’s metal can—just once.”

>Now in its 20th year, Shinjuku FACE continues to write its legacy as the “second sacred ground” of Japanese wrestling, after Korakuen Hall.

>To me, Stan Hansen was someone who, from my early days, helped me grow by fighting him (and getting beat to a pulp).
>Each time we fought, my mindset changed: “I want to leave a mark!!” “I want to win!!” “I can win!!”
>That’s how I gained confidence.
>I took all kinds of lariats in that match and many others.
>Maybe the reason I’ve never strayed from my style, no matter what, is because of what I learned from Hansen-san (lol)

>All Japan Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion Jun Saito has sent a message to fans awaiting the return of his younger brother, Rei, who is currently out with a long-term injury.

>Jun is set to defend the Triple Crown against Yuma Aoyagi on August 10 at the Air Water Arena Matsumoto in Nagano. He attended a press conference in Tokyo on the 4th, where he declared:
>“I’m going to crush Yuma Aoyagi in his hometown of Matsumoto and utterly humiliate him in front of everyone.
>Get ready, Yuma Aoyagi—DOOM!”

>On the same day, All Japan Pro Wrestling announced that Rei would be sidelined indefinitely due to surgery on his right shoulder.
>Regarding the injury, Jun said:
>“Actually, before coming here today, I dropped Rei off at the hospital. He’s likely undergoing final tests now, but surgery is basically a sure thing.
>I’ve watched him fight up close this whole time. And no matter how much of a superhuman he is, it’s clear he’s been wrestling without being able to fully exert himself.
>Still, I’m not worried at all. He *will* come back to the ring.
>And when he does, the four of us—Rei, myself, Naruki Doi, and Señor Saito—will revive the full force of the Saito Brothers.
>Everyone, just wait—he’ll return stronger than ever. Wrestlers are superhuman, and he’s one level beyond that.”

>Jun added that he’s putting everything into the upcoming title defense in order to protect the place Rei will return to.
>“I’m going to keep defending this Triple Crown belt, and when Rei returns, I want to accept his challenge.
>I’m determined to protect the All Japan ring.
>With that feeling in my heart, I think Rei will be back in no time,” he said, clenching his fist.

>At All Japan Pro Wrestling’s August 3 event at Ota City General Gymnasium, the final of the junior singles league, *Zen-Nichi Jr. Festival 2025*, was held.
>B Block winner Atsuki Aoyagi (25) defeated A Block winner Rising HAYATO (26) to claim the championship.

>The two last faced off in a singles match at the same venue on June 19, 2022, where Aoyagi won with a Firebird Splash.
>Since then, both have held the World Junior Heavyweight title, and now—three years later—they clashed once again to determine the pinnacle of Zen-Nichi Juniors.

>Early in the match, Aoyagi knocked HAYATO off the ropes with a missile dropkick, sending the fight to the outside.
>HAYATO answered in kind with a dive from the second level of the venue.
>The aerial exchanges between the two sent the crowd into a frenzy within just five minutes.

>In the middle stretch, HAYATO gained the upper hand with speed, hitting a DDT on the apron.
>But Aoyagi responded with a corkscrew-style jumping high kick and nailed the “Hitodenashi Driver.”

>The high-speed, back-and-forth battle continued.
>At the 25-minute mark, Aoyagi went for the finish with the Firebird Splash but was countered with knees, putting him in a tight spot.
>However, he dodged HAYATO’s deadly “Sid Vicious” and countered with a reverse Frankensteiner.
>Landing a second Firebird Splash, he scored the three-count—repeating the exact finish from their match three years prior.

>Grabbing the mic after the match, Aoyagi roared,
>“This is All Japan Pro Wrestling Juniors! And the one who came out on top is Atsuki Aoyagi!”
>He continued, “I fought through a league where no one knew who would win, and I took home this trophy. But something’s still missing—the World Junior.
>Since I won, that gives me the right, doesn’t it?”
>He then called World Junior Champion Seiki Yoshioka into the ring.

>Yoshioka replied, “I thought about it as I walked down the ramp, but I couldn’t think of a single reason to say no,”
>and accepted the challenge. The title match was made official for the August 10 event at Air Water Arena Matsumoto in Nagano.

>That same event will also feature Aoyagi’s older brother, Yuma, challenging Triple Crown Champion Jun Saito.
>So the Aoyagi brothers will both be vying for titles in their hometown.
>“I’m going to ride this momentum and take the World Junior, so everyone in Ota—come to Matsumoto! I’ve remembered your faces,” Aoyagi said, encouraging the crowd to travel to Nagano.
>He closed the show with a rousing chant:
>“All Japan Pro Wrestling—PLUS ULTRA!”

>He was my senior at DDT, the same age as me. He had everything: physique, strength, style, and cheerfulness. >Everyone loved him, and I was always a little jealous. He loved clothes, which was very rare in the independent wrestling scene at the time, and he always followed his advice: "Sakai, no matter how fat you are, you shouldn't wear shorts in May. You have to be patient. Shorts start in June!" I can't believe he left so soon. I pray for his soul to rest in peace.

I could recommend good individual matches, but full-length shows would be hard to recommend. Post-COVID Japan has been pretty grim. The last show that really felt like a spectacle and had multiple good matches on it was Mutoh's retirement show in 2023. Abe and Nomura have a series of freelance shows called Kakuto Tanteidan which are consistently good. The Sareee-ISM shows are also generally pretty solid.

I think the losing unit must disband, no DQ match between R.E.D and Toryumon Generation from Dragon Gate's Final Gate 2020 is an amazing match.

It's really the culmination of the year long generational warfare storyline that they started in January of that year where the promotion was split into three faction. The R.E.D heel faction, the Dragon Gate faction of wrestlers trained under the Dragon Gate system and the Toryumon Generation from wrestlers trained back in the Toryumon days. Also when Dragon Gate really starts to get behind pushing their younger guys (Ben-K, Shun Skywalker, Kota Minoura, Dragon Dia, Madoka Kikuta) to be seen on a level with the veteran guys that have essentially been ruling the promotion since 2004
