AEW MAX VIEWRSHIP CONFIRMED DOGSHIT, AEW'S FUTURE UNCERTAIN
Highlights:
>AEW, along with countless WBD properties, will be greatly affected by the WBD split.
>“You don’t know what’s good or bad,” said Dave Meltzer on “Wrestling Observer Radio,” in a vague—if not obvious—outlook. Meltzer, who has had his own issues with AEW numbers, was inclined to believe AEW adds an additional 500,000 viewers on Max. These estimates came from a NOW DUBIOUS report from BJ Bethel of SEScoops
>While nobody knows what the actual numbers are, Zaslav’s comments on Monday’s investor call seemed to throw cold water on AEW’s viewership on Max being significant.
>“Inside the U.S., sports has been less critical,” said Zaslav. “It’s viewed, but it hasn’t been a real driver for us.”
>Zaslav went on to note that HBO Max viewership accounts for for 25% of programming spun off from the WBD networks. This means AEW, which is not part of TNT Sports though is currently listed on Max’s sports page, would fall WELL BELOW below the 500,000 additional viewers on Max.
>“If AEW is doing really good in late 2026, I think they’re pretty safe. If [AEW] is doing bad, it wouldn’t be good,” said Meltzer, once again stating the obvious. “It could be great, depending on different factors. It could be terrible, depending on different factors,” said an increasingly vague Meltzer.

The WBD split is expected to have a minimal impact on AEW. AEW's current contract with WBD, which includes TV deals with TBS and TNT, and streaming on Max, is set to remain in place until 2028. AEW's shows will continue to air as planned, and there are no immediate changes planned for AEW's media rights. The split is anticipated to take effect by mid-2026, and AEW remains a priority for WBD, indicating that the promotion will not lose any of its TV deals with WBD.

Not all contracts are fully guaranteed, in fact 99% of NFL multi-year contracts aren't (notable exception: 1st round draft picks)
Do you really think Tony Khan left money on the table in order to get a fully-guaranteed deal? Or was the aim to get as much money as possible, "prove" AEW can draw high numbers, and if the station cancels (with 3-6+ months notice) go walk right to their competitor with a #1-5 ranked show and mid-teens demo every week
I can't prove anything but I'm certain it's the latter. Tony has enough money to not need guarantees, especially if that guarantee could lead to Dynamite airing at 11pm to get their "full pay"

People here are so mindraped they can't even process what I'm saying, they just go straight to their "fuck edrones" playback
AEW's rights can't be sold to another party, so if WBD can't afford them, they get canceled. Simple as. But that doesn't mean they couldn't immediately go to Paramount or Disney/FX and get paid MORE (not less) than their current deal.

People fucking care more about what /pw/ roasts would look like more than they care about common sense. WWE cut Swerve and now he's a world champion and main event level talent. Shit happens, executives make mistakes, not every firing/cancel/expiration is some humiliating experience that ends careers and businesses.

TV contracts for shows are entirely based on performance and what is actively in production. The contracts are set up so that each season there is an out. The contract isn't "ironclad" as the length of it is an agreement based on the assumption that the show performs well and, most importantly, the network it is on believes it should continue. We've seen both sides of this issue. We've seen shows cancelled by a network, only to find a new home for its entire crew on another network (See the "Lucifer" series as one example). We've seen the cast of shows also refuse to continue working unless their contracts are reworked. The main point is that TV contracts cover what is in production. That is the most important thing. Once a season is ordered by a network, a set number of episodes is put into production. That is what the contract covers. The confidence in a show can be reflected in that order, as in ordering 2 seasons of a show instead of just one and then waiting to see the performance. For a live scripted show like AEW that still holds true. WB would order a season's worth of content from X month to X month as a season. That season would be under production and under contract. Anything past that is not guaranteed. Tony can foot the bill for production and film shit anyway and then try to sell it to another platform, but WB would not be beholden by some contract to have to be forced to air or pay for it.

>MORE
LOL. I appreciate that you're trying to be reasonable here but AEW has lost so much value that there's no way in hell they'll ever get a better contract than the one they negotiated last year. Imagine Tony going to Paramount or Disney and saying "so yeah our flagship show averages between 500k and 600k viewers and the number won't stop dropping so give us over $185 million dollars per year now please".

The problem with AEW shopping itself and getting more than what WB offered is who would be interested? While everyone wants some sort of live sports content, not everyone has a budget to afford it. Amazon, Netflix, and Apple are the biggest players looking for that sort of content and have shelled out to buy it. The issue is those three companies only want major audience driving content. Like how Amazon went for the NBA and NFL games rights, Apple went for MLB and Soccer, and Netflix has gone for the NFL, WWE and is looking to get MLB content as well. Those parties are holding their money for that content and not spending it on anything else. At least not spending more than what WB spent on AEW. Smaller platforms are available but that is why Tony really swung and missed with CW. That NXT money could have been secured for at least one of his shows. Instead he wanted to show allegiance to WB, which made sense since he had a personal relationship with the guy running it. Not diversifying his contracts and content over multiple platforms though has hurt him, because major players will not offer more than WB did, if anything at all, and the smaller platforms will for sure not spend more than WB while also being a smaller potential audience and a perception that AEW is on a smaller network.

It's not 10 people but what do you think is a number that would be worth investment for WB. It has lost the rights to the NBA, and even its highly rated NBA pre and post game show is now being split with ESPN. That was a major blow. Why does that matter? Because live sports n a platform is looked at as a bundle to create cross exposure and improve overall viewership. Losing something like the NBA diminishes the prospective total audience for all of a platform's live sports content. It's the reason why shows a platform is trying to set for success are given lead ins by big nationally televised games. A big prime time NFL game will often as the lead in for a new show they want to highlight. Likewise, a big NBA game can act as a lead in for another live sporting event. Right now Max only has F1 racving and a collection of alternative sports like biking and Redbull competitions as well as AEW as its live sports offerings. None of those things has a large following fans. None of them will entice a large number of people to subscribe to that platform to watch them either, which is the whole point of investing in their content.

>Why else you think Netflix is desperate for more eyes and is telling wwe to expose the business in a doc.
Netflix ordering more WWE related content is a sign that WWE is doing well and bringing viewers. Netflix is notorious for canceling content because it doesnt meet expectations or shutting down projects that aren’t working. When WB was ordering more content from AEW that was a good sign (more wrestling shows, the reality tv stuff etc). Fans even stated that. But that has gone the other way lately. WB has been cuttign AEW content and has not asked for spinoffs or more adjacent content. That is not a good sign.

You can't compare the content of a Youtube creator to a streaming platform, because on you're paying a premium for and the other is available for free. Getting hits on Youtube content can be beneficial to a fed for exposure, which is why WWE has a machine to do so, but WWE isn't sustaining itself financially through those views like a Youtube creator is. They aren't the same thing. What counts for a 'viewer' to an AEW episode is something WB knows exactly the number of. It does not need Nielsen or some 3rd party to know the number. It can see exactly what each of its subscribers watch and for how long.

What is the bjs report? I'm not familiar with that. The only way a number would be correct for a show on Max would be if WB shared that info on a conference call, earnings call, stockholder report, or PR release. That doesnt happen often because they dont like sharing info that can affect ad sales. So unless it is an obvious success those numbers are rarely seen. That being said, half a million views for AEW doesnt sound right. Apple TV purchased MLS to add viewers. Each MLS match has been annunced to draw 120k unique viewers. Soccer is not football but it is also not wrestling. I dont think AEW is garnering 4 times the viewers

The last wrestling to air on Disney, from what I can tell, is AWA on ESPN in the late 80s (then replays on ESPN Classic 20 years later). AEW wouldn't get a deal with the Disney channel, obviously, and probably not ABC or ESPN, but ESPN2, or FX or one of their other networks could be an option.

Amazon would be an intriguing option of AEW wanted to cancel Collision, move to 3-hour Dynamite, and do monthly/bi-monthly Amazon super-shows to go along with their ~10 yearly PPVs. Good place for Toni/Mercedes to main event a commercial free show short of a $50 PPV.

>>18385027
For the purposes of this conversation, Swerve is a draw and main eventer for AEW

>>18385030
I can already tell you AEW fan's argument: AEW contracts are exactly the same terms as WWE, the only thing different is the dollar amount. So if WWE is fully-guaranteed, no exit clauses, then so is AEW. If WWE needs a full year notice before cancellation, then so does AEW. This is insanely unlikely to be the case given the number of WWE partners compared to AEW's 1 individual media partner, however this is what they will argue.

>>18385034
The biggest hurdle for Disney would be agreeing to a TV rating - would Disney+ want AEW at TV14, using words like prick/shit/whore, violence against women? Probably not. Would ESPN+, also no. But for Paramount+ it wouldn't be an issue, and they need content.

>>18385054

One sport out drawing another is true abut anything. The NFL out draws the NBA, which out draws MLB. That doesnt lend credence to AEW gaining 4-5x times the number of the average MLS game. The amount something is outdrawing is important. MLS is also a major draw for Apple, it actively pushes it as a reason to get the service. AEW is not pushed by WB as a major reason to subscribe to Max. It would be even more incredible for AEW to then draw 4 times more viewers than an MLS game. Apple would probably be asking AEW to create content for it, if that was the case,

I appreciate your comment a lot and I just want to stress, knowing we're right here on /pw/ (huge pop) that this is legitimately high-value discourse and I'm very thankful for it.

On the whole, I agree with you but for one thing in particular, that streaming giants are the only ones bidding for content, when traditional TV still gets roughly 2/3 of ad dollars (roughly $146B in 2024). Disney/ESPN still has a huge footprint on TV, so if they can convince wrestling fans who otherwise wouldn't subscribe to cable without their wrestling show being on a channel, then it has to be done.

The biggest question continues to be, if AEW wasn't on cable, how many subscribers would providers lose (out of AEW's likely well over a million Live plus 7)? If they only lose 100k or so, because the other 900k either watch other shows or ALSO need cable to watch WWE, then likely nothing happens. If it's closer to 300-500k - and cable/satellite providers would be able to prove it by cross-referencing viewers who watch one/other/both/neither - then it could be worth it to keep AEW even as an (on paper) loss-leader. Traditional and Streaming TV these days is all about loyalty, how many loyal fans do you have, how many will travel with you, how do we keep them loyal to both you and to us.

I didn't mean to sound like I was GUARANTEEING AEW would get a better deal if WBD dumped them, I'm just saying, they're unlikely to end up on the Bass Fishing channel at 3am, doing shows out of bowling alleys. Major broadcasting companies out there would offer AEW a replacement deal and it would be for a substantial amount of money.

Again generalities apply to everything and nothing at all. We're talking about a particular soccer league, MLS, and a specific wrestling fed, AEW. To say AEW is doing 4-5 times the number that MLS is doing with Apple marketing MLS harder than WB advertises for AEW is not a low bar. If that were the case AEW would be able to shop other shows that were cancelled on WB, onto a platform like Apple and they would be interested. That isn't the case.

There are a lot of troll "AEW fans" who make critiquing or even discussing AEW a chore, and they do it on purpose. Literally they do it to dissuade you from doing anything other than discussing your favorite AEW wrestlers/matches. Discussing booking, ticket sales, revenue, ratings, anything else at all, they will attack you personally because they don't want those things to be discussed in ANY context, not just AEW vs WWE. I wish they would fuck off and let people talk about what they want, but unfortunately most of them have a zero tolerance policy, even if/when you make it clear you're doing so in good faith. They simply don't care.

When you see "baked in", what they mean is that they don't sit down and individually negotiate everyone's salary and bonuses to do the Saudi shows. It's a bonus, it's a percentage of salary above the norm, and you either agree to go or you opt out. If you want to make the 120% (or 110%, or whatever) of your contract you can make in a year, you do the Saudi shows. If you're OK with only making 100% of your salary, you skip them.

The post that post was responding to had a post number ending in "91". 91 could be referencing the year 1991, which 1992 follows afterwards. 1992 was an interesting year, which included an infamous incident from the professional wrestler, Kevin R. Nash.

To answer your question, yes, Kevin R. Nash was sexually assaulted during the summer months of 1992.
