Insider here. AEW getting paid $185 million per year is contingent on them meeting performance goals. They've missed said goals by a wide margin so WBD isn't paying them anywhere near $185 million this year. That's why Dave Meltzer suddenly stopped calling AEW the "second most profitable wrestling promotion in history" and moved the goalposts for that happening to next year. But the likelihood of AEW meeting performance goals in 2026 is non-existent based on their current trajectory. Tony is putting on a happy face in public but behind the scenes he's in full blown panic mode and trying to come up with an "exit plan" for AEW leaving WBD.

It is blatantly obvious the $185m / yr figure is inflated. Some AEW wack job last week made the argument that cable fans are worth 2-3x more than broadcast, which of course means that WBD should be paying 2-3x what CW is paying for NXT for Dynamite, and maybe another $30-38 million for Collision.

WBD either hilariously overpaid - to the tune of $70 million - or the $185m number is bullshit.

Frankly, if I were an AEW fan, I'm not sure which I'd prefer.

I mean maybe? It was contingent on them getting weekly content for the Streaming service too which is hard to come by in this day and age. Either you get sports, or something kind of live taped show. AEW delivering 4 hours of content to that service was probably a big part of why they got as much as they did. There's not that many new shows that come to Max, they tend to get older shows on shorter term deals than Netflix etc.

I wonder how AEW would have done if they had shopped the TV rights and Streaming deals separately. AEW on Amazon would have made perfect sense since they have POV carriage infrastructure while Max is STILL waiting for that implementation. The streaming wars are all about a mix of new and historic content, the whole thing is fucking stupid to me.
