I was browsing the AJPW battle library a couple of years ago and they had a match from the Muto Puroresu Love years where Sasaki and a 15 year old Nakajima were facing Umaga and Rosey. Genuinely one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Sasaki and Umaga started the match just beating the shit out of each other, and Nakajima sees a chance when they work towards his corner of the ring and tags himself in. Sasaki looked at him confused, and then shrugged his shoulders and let Nakajima enter the ring. Nakajima squares up with Umaga and looks so tiny compared to him and then just full force roundhouse kicks Umaga in the face. Umaga tanked it and just stood there with this expression on his face like

And then starts shooting on him. I mean laying those punches in full force. Meanwhile off in his corner Rosey is looking super concerned like he is worried that Umaga is going to go too far and hurt the kid, and Sasaki is in his corner laughing his ass off over his retarded son trying to get himself over by doing the stupidest shit imaginable.

Great match.

He had a late start and a short "era" where he could have been Ace. He started in the shadow of Chono & Hashimoto. He spent those formative years largely relegated to the tag division, with another underrated goat in Hiroshi Hase. The three musketeers made no room for anyone at the top... right up until Kojima, Tenzan, & Nagata arrived alongside the sudden surge of interest in MMA.

The only time period where you could make any argument about him being Ace was during the nWo Japan days. For a little while Sasaki was the face on NJPW and was the only guy having any success against Chono, Tenzan and Mutoh.

Sasaki is GOAT-tier, with or without Ace status. He was a bonafide star, and was one of the first guys to get the top title at NJPW, AJPW and NOAH.

Plus, his late career indy run with Nakajima was fantastic. They popped up everywhere from ROH to DragonGate, Tenryu Project, ZERO-1, DDT, etc.

I've been watching Inokiism era New Japan and the wrestling itself is mostly awesome. Fujita is too when he's around. He has such a scary aura to him. In the era of forced 30+ minute epics, I like how fast they get to the point in this time period. I'd prefer more of that over stuff like Shota and ZSJ at the Dome.
