The brutality and desperation of the WWF era forced stars to either be good on the mic or put in the work, on top of making house shows on the weekly. The work rate now is probably 10 to 20 times less compared to what someone like Austin went through. Things are more scripted than ever now as well, production is too clean, so the sensibility of the live arena doesn't suspend your disbelief. It looks much more like theater than something like a real ring with exaggerated people in them. I won't say that people have turned too sensitive but there is absolutely a drastic shift in these new talent not knowing true hardship and plunging deep down for creativity because their backs were to the wall. Back then, if you didn't cut it, you were probably cut almost immediately, and that was something that couldn't happen because you were broke and living on raw potatoes. You HAD to be successful. There was no other choice.
Now yes, a good chunk of it was perpetuated through nepotism and fetishization of talent like H and Taker, but even now and then those guys occasionally put in decent work. There's a difference now. A large difference.
