It's been made clear to Jay that he'll be jobbed out the rest of his AEW career for being the top heel during CM Phil's Collision run. This will destroy his worth on indies and to E, so he's decided to fake injuries until Tony just releases him.
Similar threats were made to Juice Robinson, who's protected to a point by his relationship with Toni Storm (though she's being booked as a lesbo so they can't be an on-screen item). Juice was booked to lose every Continental match so he faked being hurt like Jay.

He's one of the strongest booked guys on the roster though. He's lost about 5 matches and he was getting booked strong and a programme with Hangman was getting teased before the Owen.
