We all know that Vince was the only TRULY irreplaceable part of the Attitude Era. The question is, who else could have played Austin's role as the rebel without a cause? Could HHH have been the guy?

Nope, they have to change the angle a little without Austin because his gimmick is the ultimate ass kicker redneck.

The thing is the thematic role of a rebel alone wasn't what put Austin over, it was him being southern as hell. Wrestling was and always will be a southern thing, so seeing some hick who drinks beer, drives a truck, fishes and hunts, curses like it's casual, blows off his boss and just wants to get shit done is exactly the kind of guy that perfectly resonated with the southern audience. He was "The Ideal Common Man". Compare this to someone like Punk who was idolized to be a symbol for the outcasts. That's a more midwest and northern thing, so even in spite of his "popularity", it wasn't an overwhelming popularity like Austin.

Austin was already over when Vince took an active role in the storyline
Austin got over because he was Austin, a solid overlooked late territory wrestler who had been shunned by everyone, took no shit from anybody, and reinvented himself in ECW
nobody else could have been the guy because he was the last of his breed to ever get signed in such a prominent position by a major wrestling company

it doesn’t happen without picrel, Austin's promo and the feud with Bret were what made it happen, it’s like saying Vince would’ve done the national expansion with Kerry Von Erich as champion

I always thought without Austin, Vince would middle about until he could get Hogan to come back, he never knew what to do without a mega star driving the show

Without Austin, it would have been Mick
he was the only other guy besides Austin people really believed in
As in "we know this shit's fake, but this guy isn't"
3rd most over guy in 98-2000 on the roster, could promo, and have a match with anybody even while being functionally braindead

I don't know if ahmed could have been a megastar, but he definitely could have been a lot more. A lot of people forget how over he was at first.

Austin play a second fiddle to him after late 1999, anon. Missing out on the second half of 1999 to early 2000 really fucked his career.

I actually think JBL could have maybe done it. He was around at that time as a midcard heel (that was the justin"hawk"bradshaw phase) and is a genuine redneck like austin.

Stunning Steve was more over than Ringmaster or ECW Austin though. Hollywood Blondes Austin was in some ways more a preview of Stone Cold.
