You just provided the perfect example for why weight divisions SHOULD be enforced. Why would anyone want to see a 90 pound twink beat a 300 pound powerhouse? A fluke win out of nowhere is fine but making it a regular event just cheapens the event.

If a junior wants to compete with the heavyweights they just need to graduate. Plenty of NJ juniors stepped up... Hase, Takada, Otani, Omega, Ibushi, and Ospreay did it. Ishimori and Hiromu can't, and that's fine.

90 pound twinks shouldn't be wrestlers. But as it stands right now, guys like Naito and Narita could easily pass off as Junior Heavyweights while guys like Fujita can easily pass off as Heavyweights. They are not real weight divisions, it's a gimmick. Wouldn't you rather have Fujita or Hiromu compete in the G1 over shitters like Newman? It's a waste of loyal, hard-working, dimes New Japan talent. This is why the open weight division exists. They can transition Juniors to heavyweights anytime they wish. And they did so too in this tournament....with Drilla Moloney. So they are basically doing what I want them to do but they are doing it with dimless shitters like Drilla instead of based panty droppers like Fujita.

I'm the guy you asked the question of, don't pay any attention to the resident schizo that responded to your post with gibberish.

I can see the logic of dissolving weight divisions when you lay it out like that... but the fact that the division has become less a rule, and more a gimmick is more of a problem in my eyes than "wasted" talent in the juniors. Newman is a little twink, he shouldn't be in the G1 period. Would I rather Despy or Fujita compete over Newman? Yes, absolutely but even better keep Newman out and invite a heavyweight from NOAH or AJPW or something. Just a guest heavyweight that can spice things up like they did in past.

Despy is the only junior right now that I could see competing in the heavyweight division... and that's more to do with his style, versatility and age.

Plus, if you do away with weight divisions you lose the Best of the Super Juniors tournament, which has proven to be an evergreen event for NJPW.

Yep. Right now the official ranking are
1. Tsuji
2. Shota
3. Narita
4. Uemura
5. Boltin
Both Tsuji and Shota made the playoffs so they are ahead. Tsuji beat Shota so he is ahead of him. Narita beat Shota but Shota was protected in his loss and Narita failed to make the playoffs. But he is ahead of Uemura because he beat Zack.

Not a fan of this after what they did to Kaito Kiyomiya. They had freakin Hikuleo advance over Kaito. It maybe a different story if they get someone freelancer who wrestles for multiple companies. You are also missing my original point. Talented wrestlers like Fujita shouldn't be confined to the Junior division and be wasted doing nothing during the G1 tour. In that case, they could even have one of the G1 qualifier matches be full of Junior Heavyweight division every year. All I'm saying is that they have some really good talent on their roster that they are not using in the G1 and they are not in a position where they can afford to do that anymore.

Nice, I wouldn't expect anyone to recognize my posts but, despite the harsh label for Tsuji fans in my previous post, I don't he's a failure like Shota.

I just think he's been the victim of inconsistent booking and saddled with a seemingly dormant faction. When it became apparent that Naito and BUSHI were leaving they should have done... something with Tsuji. Have him "jump the line" and take over LiJ or have him forced into a second-in-command role under Shingo. Create tension and build to the obvious betrayal. Instead Gedo did... nothing, and now LiJ is not really a thing and Tsuji has no real faction. In a lot of ways Narita is in a similar, albeit worse, situation. His faction is active but he's just an underling with no purpose in a faction led by a weak leader.

The Reiwa Muskateers were selected poorly. Shota was given every chance to succeed, even a main even at the dome but the response from fans domestic and abroad has been abysmal.

It might sound heretical but NJPW needs Four Pillars: Tsuji, Uemura, Oiwa, and Narita.

>EVIL isn't actually evil, The House is, and the match with Takeshita basically outright told Gedo - there is massive money in HOT kicking him out and turning EVIL face. When EVIL gets going and becomes just a head-knocking strike/powerhouse hybrid, he is ridiculously fun to watch. If executed properly, this could be one of those well-remembered moments/turns that legit makes the crowd upset, especially if HOT go out of their way to really beat the shit out of EVIL, maybe even make him bleed or break his leg, idk.

>EVIL has a Crow Sting-esque run just waiting to happen, and if anyone in the company should be a loner tweener without any allegiances it's him. "5 years as a Young Lion, 5 years in LIJ, 5 years in The House - now I wanna finally be on my own", and you're off to the races. Periodically, the announcers have mentioned EVIL's real name on commentary, so I don't know if he'd go back to that, but I imagine not since he's been EVIL for a decade now and the name is iconic.

>The man is about to be 39 in a few months, so he is basically in his prime years. Invest into him wisely, and turn him soon-ish, so that we can get 4-5 years of still physically capable but even more over than he was before EVIL putting on hoss bangers in the upper card/main event!

Fujita might not be doing much during the G1 Climax but he was the star of the BOSJ tournament... and all the heavyweights were sitting on the sidelines. That's the way it's always been. Wouldn't you rather see Fujita headline the BOSJ tournament rather than eat 12 losses in the G1 finishing at the bottom of his division? That's what usually happens when juniors competed in the past, Takaiwa was BOSJ champ and he finished his G1 with 1 point. Minoru Tanaka went winless in 2001. Even Liger had a pathetic showing in 2006.

What they did to Kaito was cruel and unprecedented. Nobody wants that. If you look further back in the history of the G1 you'll find much better showings from Japanese outsiders like Tenryu, Akiyama, Kawada, Sugiura, Shiozaki, Marufuji, Nakajima, etc.

I know it annoys the resident schizo when I mention names from the past but there's a solid history of Japanese outsiders "invading" and spicing up the G1... without being absolutely gaped like Kiyomiya or, worse, this year with an outsider winning.

He is free to book whatever on his show, including hot-potatoing the title if he wants to. New Japan just needs Takeshita walking in as the IWGP heavyweight champion at the Tokyo Dome.

>He particularly praises Takeshita's aggressive attitude. "I really feel that she has her antenna up everywhere, jumping on new topics that come up in life and making them her own. She's complaining about being busy with three organizations, but she might not be able to do what she wants later even if she wants to, so she should be happy that she's in a position where she's expected to do it. She's still young and full of energy, so I think she should keep going until she overheats," he said.

Capitalism.

Meaning: the Bushiroad suits saw the short-term gains of Tony Khan giving them 1 million USD gates and payouts for the partnership and didn't give two shits about any lasting damage done to the promotion, which they are eager to get rid of and sell anyway, even if it's devalued significantly.

They probably believe they can make Khan vastly overpay for its worth because he's such a mark.
From a ruthless Japanese salaryman point of view, it makes perfect sense. However, as a NJPW fan, it is excruciating.

I’m seeing a lot of comments down here that seem to have a knowledge of NJPW without either having been to a show or following what their pricing tends to look like. There’s nothing wrong with not knowing, but the confident incorrectness is what it is.

Japanese ticket sales are done through distributors that don’t have fluctuating prices. WWE’s ticket prices are insane, and they’re only made more insane by Ticketmaster or StubHub fees, surge pricing, resale vendors cranking the prices, whatever. Japan doesn’t have that. You buy a ticket in a specific section and get what you get from there, with the prices varying by section. For example, I got a floor seat for Wrestle Kingdom 17 for 80 bucks, and ended up about ten rows back in an aisle seat, giving me an amazing view for shit like Omega vs. Ospreay. Front row seats for that show were a few hundred bucks, and came with a lot of merch and photo ops and what have you. It was SHOCKINGLY cheap compared to the States.

So, these tickets seem out of left field, right? Well, until you see that these Tanahashi tickets are not “front row seats” in the traditional sense. The front row seats are WAY cheaper. These are literally within the fencing, and come with whatever bonus goods they throw in (usually worth hundreds of dollars by themselves). There’ll probably only be five or six of the things for sale. Are they worth 7 grand? No, of course not. It’s a greedy number. But NJPW (and Japanese promotions in general) have a lot of old, nostalgic fans that pay the bills for the company, and there will ABSOLUTELY be a few die-hard Tanahashi fans past retirement age who have money to spend and would gladly spend it on this. Hell, if I had a few million bucks lying around, I’d go for it because it’s fucking Tanahashi, and he’s arguably the greatest to ever do it and I love him.
Anonymous No.18588696
Because of that, the price for these seats are not at all attached to how hot the product is. They’re attached to people’s love of Tanahashi. He’s worshipped by countless fans there, and the people with the kind of income to afford these seats WILL buy them. Many probably won’t know who most of the roster is, they’ll just want to see Tanahashi’s last match. It’s why Muto’s retirement moved so many seats, or why retirees get the largest pops at puro shows when they show up. This’ll be the same thing.

This is not a normal thing for them to do. Pricing like this is not why the product is going downhill or why ticket sales are declining, lmao. Every year before this, you can easily get a decent seat at the Dome for like fifty bucks. If the rest of the ticket prices go up exponentially I’ll be the first to say I was wrong, but nothing NJPW’s done has reflected the potential for that as of yet. These are unique. Seats priced at 7k are not representative of how shit usually is, and anybody who says otherwise is just plainly wrong, so to say it’s the cause of anything is laughable. It’s not like WWE ticket pricing where you gotta donate a kidney to get in the door, or hell, even to get in the front row. This is just for the deeply devoted Tanahashi fans who are multimillionaires and want the super stupid VIP treatment.

Japanese wrestling fans with money to spend are predominantly fucking old, so this sort of move is honestly the best business decision NJPW’s made in a long time, even if I’m not a fan of milking their supporters dry

Explain why last year you could buy Royal Seat, 1st Row (with special benefits) tickets, which cost $1,353.90, but this year there are no Royal Seat 1st Row tickets, and instead, replacing them are Hiroshi Tanahashi Retirement Special Seats, which cost $6,769.50

The Royal Seat, 2nd Row (with special benefits) seats are still there, just like they were last year. Except last year they cost $812.34 and this year they cost $2,369.32. Same is true of 3rd Row. $372.32 last year. $1,353.90 this year.
