You can get popular in an off-grid kind of way by knowing how to play the attention game, which is what a lot of these youtubers/streamers turned artists tend to do. They never get taken seriously by the major publications and journalism outlets, nor do they get mentioned by critics, or go on tours, but they cultivate a fanbase. That's not even getting into the actually good music produced by ''underground'' artists.
