AEW's peak in ratings was Hangman's rise to beat Omega. He did fuck off and ruin that feud because he took a month off and that fucked everything. the last 2 weeks he's barely been the focus. he has no challenger, no clear direction. that's on the booking. the chicago residency did two weeks of 700k with him at the top and tony ruined it.

tony only ever had one confirmed draw in punk and gave him 2 world title wins (both leading to immediate injury) and his own live touring show with creative control. tony literally did choose punk over the other guys and did everything to placate him until punk told tony he was quitting
"firing with cause" was a PR move by tony to have the final say in that situation by technicality, but punk was an employee at AEW (not a contractor) so he was literally just going to leave either way
