Some of them do. If you follow an artist who does weird porn and then their account is abandoned or scrub, there's a chance that they got hired as an artist or animator and don't want their to find their weird shit.
Some of them do get jobs and have actual work, but still do fanart as a hobby. One way to keep your skills sharp is to draw for yourself and do shit you like.
Others get enough money from commissions and patreon and their own fans already. Those ones usually hop onto every new unfunny meme or do porn because it keeps the lights on.

As an artist myself, I can tell you that working in the industry is based on how fast and how cheap you can deliver content. No matter what it is, you have to be able to have stuff ready based on a rigorous schedule and be okay getting paid based on the lowest bidder. There's tons of better jobs that are less stressful and pay more (like working at your local grocery store or McDonalds) than any kind of artistic career. It's better to just do commissions/patreaons at your own pace than getting into the industrt.
