S&P didn't grow more tightfisted about things until the '90s due to the rise of parent and religious groups complaining about shows for children like Simpsons and Beavis & Butthead. Ren & Stimpy along with a slew of new Nick cartoons would break new ground to find ways to get around censorship to show things.

If you ever flip through the Batman the Animated Series book you can see S&P at WB complaining constantly about inane things down to the race of the generic criminals featured because everything had gotten so on edge from those parental complaints "for the children"
