In the late 2000s, especially on the indies, there was a stigma against wrestling in anything other than trunks. This was the basis of the conflict between Punk and Kevin Steen that followed them both in subsequent years after Steen mentioned it in a shoot that got uploaded to YouTube. Punk himself went from wearing basketball shorts to trunks in obedience to this trend. The idea was that you must be some unserious shitter playing around in a ring on the weekends if you weren't taking care of your body enough to don a traditional pair of trunks. When Punk was the head trainer of the short-lived ROH wrestling school, he instituted this rule to all of his paying students (= manlets with zero charisma or athleticism). Not long after this, the unserious shitters began wearing trunks themselves as a means of attempting to kid themselves and others into believing that they weren't shitters. The trend died shortly thereafter.
